Today Codemasters made it official that DiRT 5 will release this year on October 9th which officially marks it as the third game we can expect from the UK developer this year (F1 2020 & Project Cars 3 are the others).
If giving us a nice juicy release date wasn’t enough they also revealed a behind the scenes video featuring Troy Baker and Nolan North who play two major characters in the game “Alex ‘AJ’ Janieck” and “Bruno Durand” respectively.
The video also features James “Mo’ Powa” Pumphrey and Nolan Sykes from Donut Media who will also have prominent roles in DiRT 5 playing themselves.
The behind the scenes featurette takes a look at building the narrative of DiRT 5 and how these characters will interact with the player. “AJ” is a legend in the DiRT series and serve as a mentor to the player providing the benefit of his previous experiences to help guide and motivate the player to defeat “Bruno Durand” who serves as the main antagonist.
Though both Troy and Nolan (North) suggest that their characters have deeper layers than it may appear at first glance.
Every time there is a major event in the narrative, the characters will appear on the Donut Media “DiRT Podcast” where they will be interviewed by Pumphrey and Sykes.
While it isn’t featured in the video, Codemasters also revealed that W Series Champion Jamie Chadwick and YouTuber SLAPTrain will also make appearances in DiRT 5.
The narrative will be split into 5 chapters and players can choose what events they want to run in each of those chapters. Finishing events will earn the player “stamps”. The better the race result, the more stamps the player will earn.
Each chapter has a “main event” that needs to be completed to move on to the next chapter but players will need to earn enough stamps to unlock each main event. Additionally there will be “Throwdown Challenges” which are one-off events that will occasionally pop up during career mode. Throwdowns are one-on-one challenges in which the player will face off against a “fierce competitor” from the circuit.
The career mode also has an option for couch co-op with up to four players. The additional players will replace the AI opponents in multi-car challenges and the highest finishing position will still count towards the main player’s career. That means even if your friend beats you in a co-op race, you still get the stamps so it’s a win-win.
By the looks of things, Codemasters is really going HAM to make sure the career mode is as deep of an experience as it can be. I am looking forward to seeing first hand if they pull it off.
Oh, and on another note, it was mentioned that information on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions of DiRT 5 “will follow at a later date”.
If I had to make a guess I’d say that date will likely be in July when Xbox is set to do another streaming event to reveal more Series X games.
For now, feel free to check out the career mode BTS featurette below. Don’t forget to check out the new screenshots and the press release as well.

The player starts their fledgling career going up against an established field. The line-up includes superstar and fan favorite, Alex ‘AJ’ Janiček and Bruno Durand, a veteran who quickly becomes the game’s antagonist. Career Mode is divided into five chapters offering multiple paths allowing players to choose the events they wish to play. The higher the finish the more Stamps the player earns, which are needed to unlock the Main Event. The highly competitive final challenge is all that’s standing in the player’s way to proceed to the next chapter. Also sprinkled throughout Career Mode are one-off Throwdown challenges. Once unlocked, players face the ultimate one-on-one challenge against a fierce competitor from the world circuit.
“DIRT 5’s Career mode underpins the entire experience and delivers a deeply immersive playground with player choice very much at the heart of it,” said DIRT 5 Development Director at Codemasters, Robert Karp. “The addition of Troy, Nolan and Donut Media has created a living, breathing world and one where the player wants to belong and compete. Whether they can rise to the Main Event and Throwdown challenges remains to be seen.”
The world tour takes players across the globe from the US to China and beyond. With real-world global brands waiting to sign fresh talent there are plenty of in-game rewards on offer based on performance and reputation rank. DIRT 5’s Career Mode also allows for local “couch co-op” support for up to four players. This option is available for all multi-car challenges with additional drivers replacing Al-controlled vehicles. With the highest finishing position counting towards the player’s career, it’s a great way to boost Stamps and help players progress.
