Nikita Mazepin has not had a great showing in his rookie year of F1. The young Russian driver has been causing controversy since his days in F2 and even in F3.
Things haven’t been great for Mazepin since his “debut” in F1 either. He spun out and destroyed his car on the first lap of the first race in Bahrain this year, earning him the nickname “Mazespin” from fans and plenty of meme’s.
That nickname surfaced again on Twitter today when Mazepin spun twice during the FP2 session of this weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.
Controversial Mazepin moments
Whether it’s punching another driver in the face or forcing other drivers off track, asking female fans for nudes (NSFW), or threatening to out other drivers, Mazepin just couldn’t seem to keep himself out of trouble on his way up the F1 ladder.
Though the biggest controversy associated with Mazepin currently is a video the driver posted on his Instagram page back in December, 2020 of him groping model Andrea D’Ival.
Despite Mazepin deleting the video, it went viral and caused a massive backlash among F1 fans who started the hashtag #WeSayNoToMazepin.
Petition to ban Mazepin from F1
Shortly after the incident took place, a Change.org petition was started calling on the FIA to ban Mazepin from F1.
When we originally reported on the incident last December, that petition had about 4,300 signatures. That same petition has 47,110 signatures at the time this article was written.
According to the Change.org page, if it hits 50,000 signatures it will become among the “top signed” on the website.
While it’s highly unlikely that the FIA would take any action as a result of an online petition, it is also hard to imagine that they’re unaware of it at this point.
Could the petition actually hit 50,000 signatures in the near future? Furthermore, will Nikita Mazepin actually complete a F1 lap this Sunday? Let us know what you think in the comments below, or tweet to us at @MotorworldHype.
