How Many Tesla Roadster Promises Will Elon Musk Break? We’ll Find Out Oct 1st

After nearly 10 years, the moment has finally arrived. Tesla is ready to show off the finished Roadster 2.0. The automaker announced on social media that the Tesla Roadster 2.0 is having its big launch party on October 1st. Naturally, I have questions.

Let’s rewind to November 2017. Tesla had its first big “one more thing” moment when it revealed the Roadster 2.0 at the end of the Tesla Semi event. What was more impressive was the fact that it wasn’t just a clay concept car but a working, driving vehicle. I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking that the Roadster was not far away, considering Tesla already had a working example at the first reveal.

Then came the promises: 250 mph top speed, 0 to 60 mph in under 2 seconds, 620 miles of range, and all for $250,000 if you want the Founder’s Edition or $200,000 for the base model. As time progressed and the release window was constantly pushed back, the promises became even more grandiose. At one point, Musk said there would be a SpaceX option package for the Roadster, which would equip it with actual rockets and that it may actually fly.

If the saga of the Cybertruck has taught us anything, it’s that when it comes to Tesla’s promises of future products, they need to be taken with hypertension-levels of sodium. Sure, the Cybertruck did eventually come to market, but with less range, less power, and a much higher price tag than originally detailed.

Will that happen to the Tesla Roadster 2.0 as well? History would suggest yes, but history also tells us that Elon Musk is nothing if not unpredictable. So, I’m going to turn this into a little game called “How many Tesla Roadster Promises Will Be Broken?” Here’s how it’s going to work: I’m going to start the game with 100 points, for each Roadster promise that is kept, I lose 20 points. For each promise that is broken, I keep those points. So, if all the promises are broken, I’ll have 100 points at the end; if Musk actually keeps all the promises, then I’ll have zero points at the end, get it?
