False Alarm: New Subaru WRX STI Is Japan Exclusive

Remember that teaser video from Subaru that had fans thinking that the STI was finally coming back to America? Well queue the clown makeup meme because it ain’t happening. Though, true to their word Subaru did reveal a new STI model, but it looks like it will be a JDM exclusive model. Sigh, here we go again…

The new Subaru WRX STI Sport# (or STI Sport “Sharp”) made its debut during the Japanese automaker’s Tokyo Auto Salon presentation. As some suspected, the STI Sport# is based on the current-gen Subaru WRX, but with one major difference: it has a manual transmission. This marks the first time a manual transmission is offered in this generation of WRX. Otherwise it has the same 2.4-liter turbo boxer engine offered in other Japanese STI models.

There are a few styling flourishes as well including a different grille, wheels, and a red stripe that follows along the bottom edge of the vehicle. Beyond that, not many details were revealed, though Subaru said it would talk more about the STI Sport# in the Spring closer to its release.

So, this is great news—if you happen to live in Japan—for American Subaru fans, its another instance of their STI hopes being dashed. Did Subaru gaslight their fans or was it a case of the fans expecting too much? It’s debatable. Regardless of what side of the argument you fall on, the fact remains that America isn’t getting a new STI. At least, not yet.

I don’t think anyone should give up on the STI returning to the American market. It’s bound to happen eventually. It might be an EV or hybrid, but it’s gonna happen! In the meantime, keep hope alive! Though, I probably wouldn’t place any bets on it happening within the next 2 years.
