Forza Motorsport 7 Reaching End Of Life

By the time this year is over Forza Motorsport 7 will no longer be available to purchase on the Xbox store or in the Windows Games store. As the saying goes “all good things must come to an end.”

Originally released in October 2017, Forza Motorsport 7 is one of the franchises most successful games and has sold millions of copies. People all over the world continue to play the game to this day.

That being said, some of those players were understandably shocked today when the official Forza Motorsport Twitter account announced that Forza Motorsport 7 would reach “end of life status” on September 15th, 2021. Especially considering that we’re still waiting on the new Forza Motorsport game. So essentially there will be a “gap” in the “Motorsport” series once Forza 7 goes away.

Why is Forza Motorsport 7 being removed?

You might be wondering why Turn 10 Studios and Microsoft would remove Forza Motorsport 7 from digital stores. The simple answer is “licensing.”

In order for the developers at Turn 10 Studios to have real world cars in their games, they have to license the rights to use those cars from their manufacturers.

Those licenses tend to be limited by time and tied to each game individually. Thus, after that time runs out, they can no longer sell that specific game with those licensed cars.

The situation is similar with licenses to use real world race tracks, locations, and other third party elements like music.

It is entirely possible for Turn 10 Studios to renew these licenses for Forza Motorsport 7. However, considering that the studio is hard at work on the aforementioned new Forza Motorsport game, it makes more sense to establish the licenses needed for the new game instead.

While it may seem kind of odd, this is actually a very common occurrence in racing games that license the use of real world cars. This is why fan favorite racing games from the past are rarely re-released. Because it would mean having to re-new all those old licenses.

How does this affect players?

The good news is that if you currently already own Forza Motorsport 7 you can still keep playing the game after September 15th, 2021 for as long as you want.

The end of life (EoL) status means that those who don’t already own the game by that date will no longer be able to purchase it. It also means that for those who own the game, they can no longer purchase any DLC content after that date.

Forza Motorsport 7 is currently available on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service which allows players to download an included game and play it as long as they’re subscribed. Though, after the the EoL date Forza Motorsport 7 will be removed from Game Pass as well.

Turn 10 Studios has stated that any subscribers who purchased DLC for their Game Pass version of Forza Motorsport 7 will get a “digital token” to add the game to their library. That way they will “own” the game and will still be able to play it even if they end their Game Pass subscription.

We also confirmed that anyone who owns the game will be able to re-download it “at any time”. So even if for some reason your hard drive crashes after the EoL date, as long as you own the game, you can get it back.

Servers for Forza Motorsport 7 will still remain active after the EoL date so that leagues and rival events can continue and the support team will continue to work on the game.

How to get Forza Motorsport 7 now

If you don’t currently own Forza Motorsport 7 there are currently two ways to get it. The first is to buy it right now on the Xbox game store. It is available with a 75% discount bringing the price down to $9.99 for the standard version and $19.99 for the “Ultimate Edition”

The second way is if you have a subscription to Xbox Game Pass, download Forza Motorsport 7 and buy any DLC pack. As far as we know it does not matter which DLC a player purchases as long as they purchase something. Once you do that you’ll get a digital token which will allow you to retain the game after the EoL date and even if you cancel your Game Pass Subscription.

Those who do not own the game and do not have a Game Pass subscription can potentially save a few bucks if they want Forza Motorsport 7. Currently, there is a promotion to get the first month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for only $1.

In theory someone could sign up for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for a dollar, download Forza Motorsport 7, and buy some DLC such as the Formula Drift car pack for $6.99, and bam they are locked in and now own the game. Sure, it is a lot of steps but saving 2 bucks is saving 2 bucks! Also, you get to check out Game Pass Ultimate for a month which is a pretty valuable service in our opinion.
