DiRT 5 “Playground” Mode Allows Players To Create Their Own Gymkhana Courses [VIDEO]

Today Codemasters announced the new “Playgrounds” mode coming to DiRT 5 later this year. Playground mode allows players to create their own courses in the middle of an off-road arena. Think Mario Maker but for motorsport.

What’s better is that players can share their creations with other DiRT 5 players online. Though, I personally think the best part of this mode is that players can create and share gymkhana courses!

Look, I don’t want ya’ll to think I’m feeling myself here but I kind of have to take credit for this. Not too long ago the official DiRT twitter account asked followers what features they wanted to see in DiRT 5. I specifically asked for a feature that allowed players to create their own courses and share them.

So yeah, you’re welcome everyone! Joking aside, I’m really looking forward to seeing if the DiRT team can pull this mode off and if so, what the community can do with it.

By the way, the Playgrounds feature allows for more than gymkhana course creation. Players can also create courses that fit into two other game modes: “Gate Crasher”, and “Smash Attack”.

Gate Crasher is a checkpoint race that puts crazy obstacles like loops between the player and the next checkpoint gate. Smash Attack is about finding objects hidden by the course creator and, well, smashing them all as fast as possible.

Whichever direction a creator wants to go, it can all be done in this mode. From there the creator can choose what car they want to be used on their course and they can even make a thumbnail for their event by using DiRT 5’s photo mode. From there the course just needs to be uploaded.

For players looking for courses to try, there will be a “Discover” menu which will highlight featured courses curated by Codemasters, and the highest rated courses by the community.

Check out the DiRT 5 Playgrounds trailer below for a better look at how it will all work. Afterwards, let me know what you think of this feature in the comments below or tweet to me at @MotorworldHype

Press release:

Create, share and discover new off-road arenas and take on the world

Larkspur, Calif. (August 27, 2020) – Codemasters® today gives players the tools to create, share and discover with the inclusion of Playgrounds, the latest new feature in DIRT 5™, coming to PlayStation®4, the Xbox One and the Xbox One X, and PC (via Steam) on October 16,, 2020. Xbox Series X and PlayStation®5 will follow later this year with Google Stadia coming early 2021.

Playgrounds allows players to design, create, edit and race on custom arenas and instantly share with the world. Using a vast suite of objects from bumps, kickers and ramps, to loops, tunnels and rings of fire, players can get creative with endless possibilities. Start with a blank canvas inside the iconic Cape Town Stadium in South Africa or take to the open space of the Arizona desert. From there, players can choose from three exciting game modes:

  • Gate Crasher – A high-speed checkpoint dash through strategically placed gates. While it sounds simple, after adding loops and other obstacles, the challenge increases ten-fold.
  • Gymkhana – Create a high-skill, fast-thrills arena peppered with drifts, donuts, and trick objects placed with precision for the perfect challenge. Players are rewarded for speed and style.
  • Smash Attack – The ultimate four-wheeled hide and seek. Strategically position smashable objects and define a target score. Players must find and collect all objects in the fastest time possible.

Once happy with the design, choose a vehicle, complete the event, create a thumbnail using the in-game Photo mode, and upload. Players from around the world can download the Playground and post their best scores to the leaderboard. The only limit to a player’s creativity is their imagination.

For those who want to get straight to the action, the Discover menu is the place to go. The Featured category hosts ever-changing arenas that the studio recommends and curates. The Top option gives players instant access to the highest-rated challenges from the community. For players who can’t decide, Lucky Dip serves a menu from all three game modes.

“Playgrounds is something we’ve wanted to share for some time. It’s unique for the DIRT franchise and, with endless possibilities, we can’t wait for our players to get creative,” said DIRT 5 Development Director at Codemasters Robert Karp. “We still have more to come so keep your eyes peeled for more exciting DIRT 5 news and check out the tease at the end of the Playgrounds trailer.”

Players who purchase DIRT 5 Amplified Edition will receive exclusive content and three days early access. The game supports both Xbox Smart Delivery and PlayStation’s free upgrade when players switch to an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5.

Keep up with all the DIRT 5 news and follow updates from the studio on Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
