EXCLUSIVE: Is The Altima Really Dead? Nissan Responds

The Nissan Altima may be the only car that rivals the Ford Mustang when it comes to memes on social media. It’s certainly an entertaining rabbit hole to go down if you have the time. However, the Altima group chat may be going away, as recent reports indicate Nissan plans to discontinue the sedan after the 2026 model year. But is that really true?

The Nissan Altima has been an affordable sedan option for decades. Mostly for people who just didn’t want a Toyota Camry. Over time, and after depreciation, Altimas found their way into lower-income families and into the hands of teenagers and college students who needed a cheap first car. This resulted in the rise of clapped-out Altimas on the road in various states of disrepair or being driven by, let’s just say, people lacking in judgment. Hence, the meme-ification of the Altima was born. Motor1 has a great deep-dive into the phenomenon.

Though, with reports stating that Nissan was going to discontinue the Altima, we feared that the meme-well would run dry. The situation demands answers. So, we reached out directly to Nissan to get to the bottom of it, and we have the automaker’s exclusive response.

“The Nissan Altima remains an important part of our lineup, meeting the needs of sedan buyers today,” a Nissan spokesperson said in a direct statement to MotorworldHype.

“We continue to see strong customer interest and later this year we will introduce a 2027 Model Year. Nissan is committed to the sedan segment, offering customers stylish, affordable cars equipped with convenient, entertaining, and safety-enhancing technologies. The all-new 2026 Nissan Sentra is a great example of this approach. We continue to enhance and refresh our model line, with exciting plans in development, but we don’t have anything further to share at this time.”

So there you have it. It looks like the Nissan Altima will live, at least until 2027. While the automaker promises it is committed to the sedan segment, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Altima is safe. Nissan could always bring back the Maxima, or introduce a new sedan model in the future. Though for now, it looks like we can confirm that tales of the Altima’s demise were greatly exaggerated.
