At $42k The 2026 Honda Prelude Is Technically Cheaper Than the Previous One
The 2026 Honda Prelude has been a point of mild controversy fans of the big H. The main points of discussion centered around the 6th gen Prelude’s hybrid powertrain and lack of a manual transmission. Now, we know how much the 2026 Prelude will cost at the dealership and we’re certain that context of price will add a whole new layer to the discussion.
How Much Is The 2026 Honda Prelude?
The 2026 Honda Prelude will have a starting MSRP of $42,000 ($43,195 when including destination charge). That price exceeds what some analyists have predicted, but Honda is quick to point out that when you adjust for inflation, the new Prelude is actually cheaper than the previous 5th-gen model that ended production in 2001. The 2001 Prelude had a starting MSRP of $23,600 which adjusted for inflation is $43,776 in 2025 money according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI inflation calculator.
That puts the 2026 Prelude at about $1,776 less than its predecessor if, we had a car dealership time machine. Will that translate to potential buyers when considering the sporty 6th-gen Prelude against competitors in the segment? That remains to be seen.
What Do You Get For The Money?
What do you get when you hand over your $42k to your local dealership for the 2026 Prelude. In a nutshell the idea is that you’re paying for a sleek, sporty, comfortable, and efficient coupe. Though, we know that if you’re reading this then you’re after some of the finer details.
At its heart, the 2026 Honda Prelude is powered by effectively the same hybrid powertrain found in the Honda Civic Hybrid. It’s good for 200 horsepower and 232 ft-lbs of torque. There’s no option for a manual transmission but Honda’s “S+ Shift” transmission which simulates the feeling of a manual transmission via paddle shifters. We did mention that Honda fans have been debating over this car right?
Though, it’s not all electric motors and simulated shifting. The 2026 Prelude borrows the same dual-axis front suspension and Brembo brakes from the Civic Type R. Both of which are tuned for this specific model application.
Will Buyers Embrace The Prelude?
What is the new Prelude actually? If you ask the average car buyer that tends to lean toward sporty vehicles, the new Prelude is a welcomed addition that shakes things up by bringing a hybrid coupe to the market and back to Honda’s lineup. If you ask a hardcore purist who prays at the church of VTEC, they might say the new Prelude betrays its badge with its electrified powertrain and lack of a third pedal.
For our part we haven’t driven the new Prelude yet so we don’t have any hands-on impressions to add to the conversation. We can see both sides of the discussion, but only those who have driven it can really say how the new Prelude stacks up. If we’re afforded the opportunity to get behind the wheel, we’ll be sure to let you know what our thoughts are.
