Just a few moments ago during Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) game livestream, the world got its first look at Gran Turismo 7 (GT7) running on PS5 hardware. Gran Turismo godfather Kazunori “Kaz” Yamauchi tweeted about the event late last night which was all but a confirmation that we would see something from Gran Turismo during the live stream.
Though the real surprise came in the game’s title “Gran Turismo 7”. During an interview that I did with Kazunori-san back in 2016, he suggested that Gran Turismo Sport (GT Sport) was actually a “reboot” of the series that that they’re wouldn’t necessarily be a Gran Turismo 7.
That response seemed to get mixed reviews from GT fans. Some appreciated a fresh take on the franchise while others were dead-set that the numbering should continue and that there should be a Gran Turismo 7 after GT Sport.
It looks like those fans got their wish today.
There was not a whole lot of information given about GT7 other than Kaz stating that fans will be “very happy especially with the campaign mode”.
From there we saw the official first trailer followed by some gameplay. During the gameplay there is a glimpse at what is called “GT Town” which looks to be the main hub of all the available modes represented as a metropolis at night; even with tiny dots of light moving along the freeways.
During the short look at GT Town we can see a significant amount of the modes and features included.
Championships, GT World, GT Auto, GT Café, Brand Central, Special Events, Scapes, and car shops (new and used) are all there. I’m sure there is a deep dive that can be done into each of those modes but that’s likely to come later with the release of more information.
What we don’t know is when Gran Turismo 7 will be released. In fact, we don’t even know if it will come out this year. If I had to guess I would say that Gran Turismo 7 will likely not be a PS5 launch game; which isn’t really all that surprising if your familiar with Gran Turismo and Yamauchi-san’s history.
Gran Turismo 7 will not come out one second before Kaz thinks its ready.
If any additional information comes out I will be sure to post it ASAP. I will also update this post as need be. For now, check out some of the screen grabs and the official trailer below.
