I know E3 was quite a while ago but I have a lot of content in the chamber. I fell a bit behind due to a bout of bronchitis but I think I am back in fighting shape now and ready to get into it.
Anyway, as the title of this post states, while I was at E3 I had a chance to go hands on with the new GRID reboot which was announced shortly before the convention. I jumped on my email and managed to nab a time slot before they got completely booked.
It was one of my last appointments of the first day and I have to admit that I was completely surprised by GRID in the best way. If I’m being totally honest, I am not what you would call a huge GRID fan. I didn’t dislike the previous games but I never really played them much.
Because of that, I went into the demonstration not really knowing what to expect. What I got was a breath of fresh air. Of all the racing games I played at E3, I have to admit that the GRID reboot left the most lasting impression.
Most of that stems from the fact that in GRID they are really trying to do something different with the AI drivers to make racing feel more competitive again. The key to that was essentially making the racing not necessarily about you, the player. The AI drivers in the GRID reboot are just as concerned with beating the other AI drivers as they are with beating you.
That aspect combined with the new “carriographer” which orchestrates human errors in the AI, and with the new “nemesis” system which will have AI drivers looking for revenge if you race them dirty all creates an ambitious experience that should feel different with every race.
I did not get to play GRID for very long. In fact, I was only able to do a few laps in two different races but that was enough to get me very interested in what’s to come in the future. Watching AI drivers fight each other for position is something I haven’t seen in a racing game for a long time.
