It was made official this morning that a new Hot Wheels racing game is in the works. Hot Wheels Unleashed is a new racing game based on the iconic die-cast cars coming later this year for PC and consoles.
If you’ve been a reader of this site for an extended period of time then you know that we’re big fans of Hot Wheels around here. We still have dreams about our Willy Wonka-like trip to the Mattel Design HQ back in 2018.
You might also know that we’re a big fan of racing games around here as well. So, needless to say, we’re pretty interested anytime there is a cross over between video games and Hot Wheels.
That brings us to Hot Wheels Unleashed which as officially revealed today. Hot Wheels Unleashed is a racing game created by Italian game developer Milestone. Milestone has a history of producing racing games and were behind some of the official WRC games of the past. Currently they focus more on motorcycle and motocross racing games like MotoGP and the Monster Energy Supercross official game.
As you might suspect, Hot Wheels Unleashed is all about racing the same Hot Wheels die-cast cars that we’ve been collecting since childhood but in crazy environments.
There will be boosts, jumps, drifts all happening on the iconic orange tracks that are seared into our memories.
Hot Wheels Unleashed will have a single player campaign, online multiplayer, and offline multiplayer as well which is a plus in our book. Racing against others online is great but we’re old school so split-screen couch competition is where it’s at for us.
The game will also feature what Milestone calls a “revolutionary” track editor which will allow players to create their own Hot Wheels courses and share them online.
If it lives up to the claim, then we can expect to see some pretty insane courses pop up within the community. Racing game content creators like Don Joewon Song have already expressed their hype for this game on Twitter.
If Milestone can pull this off, then Hot Wheels Unleashed has the potential to be a hit with the racing game community.
We’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out if this game delivers on its promises. Currently Hot Wheels Unleashed isn’t set to release until September 30th, 2021 for consoles (Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch) and PC.
For now, we can pour over the official reveal trailer to glean anymore tidbits that give us a hint as what’s to come. Though it should be noted that the trailer is cinematic and doesn’t show any actual gameplay.
If the trailer is enough to make you want to open your wallet, Hot Wheels Unleashed is open for pre-order starting today. Pre-orders come with the “Beefed Up” DLC pack which includes two additional cars: an armored truck, and a Baja version of the popular “Bone Shaker” Hot Wheels car.
It’s possible that we’ll all learn more this game in June during what we’re calling “E3 season”. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.
In the meantime check out the reveal trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments or tweet to us at @MotorworldHype!
