This Honda F1 Model Costs More Than an Actual Car
I’ve been known to throw financial responsibility to the wind when a find a collectable that grabs my attention, but this new model from Honda is next level even for me. The automaker is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its first Formula 1 win at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix in grand fashion. Honda has teamed up with Amalgam Collection to create a limited 1:8 scale model of the RA272 (chassis #103) F1 car that earned the historic win.
Wait, The Model Costs How Much?!
You might want to clench up for this, but if you want the 1:8 model of the Honda RA272 it will cost you a wallet-melting $28,995 USD before taxes. To put it in perspective, for that money you could by a 2025 Honda Civic sedan, or HR-V crossover at MSRP and still have change left over. It’s a staggering amount of money, though in context the price isn’t ludicrous.
For Serious (Or Rich) Collectors
As previously mentioned, the Honda RA272 model is produced in partnership with Amalgam Collection, a company that prides itself on creating “perfect” models of race cars, sports cars, and vintage cars. All of its models are recreated to very fine detail and are all hand built and painted. As such, 1:8 scale models from Amalgam Collection regularly fetch five-figure price tags.
This specific Honda RA272 model has over 1,600 precision-engineered parts including a completely replicated V-12 engine. To ensure model accuracy, a team from Amalgam Collect traveled to the Honda Collection Hall in Motegi, Japan to digitally scan the original car. Once the data was captured the model builders got to work. Apparently, it takes over 450 hours to build each one. Speaking of, the RA272 model will be limited to only 30 units so whoever owns one will be part of a pretty exclusive club.
There Is a “Cheaper” Version Available
I think it’s safe to say that the majority of you reading this probably aren’t comfortable with dropping nearly $30k on a model of a car that you can’t drive. Furthermore, a 1:8 scale model is pretty big so even if you had the funds, space might be an issue too. Luckily, there’s a solution available.
In addition to the 1:8 scale Honda RA272 model, Amalgam Collection is also producing a 1:18 scale model that is much more desk and wallet friendly. The 1:18 scale will only cause you the paltry sum of $1,735 USD. There will be much more of the 1:18 scale models available with a production run of 300.
Both the 1:8 and 1:18 scale models will come with a bespoke display case, certificate of authenticity and commemorative booklet signed by Honda Racing Corporation President Koji Watanabe.
The models will be available for purchase at The Quail event during Monterey Car Week. Considering that the event is regularly attended by millionaires and billionaires, Honda probably won’t have much trouble selling every last model before the week is over.
