They say that the best creative people are always reinventing themselves. Despite producing things that might be loved by millions, the creators are always thinking about doing something new. Ken Block is one such individual. The popular rally driver who helped give a whole new meaning to “gymkhana” had easily one of the most flashy presences in WRC or in GRC. His bright white, black, and bright green “paint drip” livery was always the easiest car to spot at any event. However, despite his livery being a favorite among fans, the design was about two years old and Mr. Block wanted a change. Not just in livery but for the whole “look” of his brand.
As such he has re-launched his team. Starting with the team name it has now changed from the “Monster World Rally Team” to “Hoonigan Racing Division” giving top billing to his Hoonigan clothing line over Monster Energy Drink (which still remains a sponsor). Ken has also revealed an all new team HQ near his home in Park City, Utah which features state of the art facilities despite being constructed mostly from recycled shipping containers. Block wanted to use shipping containers as a way to be not only environmentally friendly but to keep everything completely modular and somewhat portable. If Ken ever had to move locations, he could literally put his HQ on the back of a semi-truck and drive it away then set it up again somewhere else. Pretty cool huh?
Obviously, the new headquarters is not the only part of the re-launch. Ken has completely re-done the liveries on both his Gymkhana car and his GRC/WRC car. Replacing the dominant “Monster Energy green” color is a bright blue color. Also, instead of the “paint drip” look there is an all new scheme inspired by 90’s skateboard graphics. All together, it looks like Ken Block will remain the favorite car to look at for the 2013 season. If you want to see more pics and learn more about the team relaunch just visit HooniganRacing.com
Volkswagen is throwing their hat into the rally game for 2013. Today they announced that their multi-surface weapon of choice will be the new Polo R. Volkswagen will drop a 300HP 1.6 liter engine into the the all-wheel-drive Polo R. Now that they have officially put the world on notice and have the specs of their car sorted out all they need is a driver to make it all worthwhile. Although at this point in the game it is too early for them to make any announcements but you can be sure they are on the look out for talent.
DiRT3 is coming out next month and there are scores of Gymkhana and Rally fans waiting for its release with baited breath. Usually when a big game release is on the horizon there is some sort of “special edition” or bundle pack offered to those who really want something collectible when they pick up the game they’ve been waiting months for. It’s a common practice with popular shooter franchises like Halo and Call Of Duty. Now DiRT3 will be among that group as there will be a special bundle pack available now for pre-order in which buyers will get the game itself but also the popular Ken Block Traxxas R/C Gymkhana car. Awesome right?! The bundle pack will set you back $299 but before you scoff at the price you should know that the R/C car itself normally goes for 300 bucks. So instead of thinking of it as paying $299 a game you should see it more as buying a cool R/C car and getting a $60 game for free with it! If that wasn’t enough, pre-ordering with Game Stop will also get you several unlockable cars, tracks, and events right off the bat while the rest of the world has to earn them the legit way!
If that sounds like a good deal to you then head over to Game Stop and pre-order the bundle right now for Xbox 360 or PS3 before they run out.

After his magnificant crash at the WRC Rally Of Portugal, Ken Block decided to hop on a red-eye flight back to the states to spectate at the first round of Global RallyCross at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale. I caught up with him to get his thoughts on the event and ask him about his 2011 plans which include welcoming a new hooigan into the world.
What you are going to watch below is a jam packed week full of events for Ken Block condensed down into a three-minute and twenty-six second long video. The edit is actually done in a pretty cool way and really gives you a slight feel for what its like to be “Kenny From The Block” for a week. It also gives you an idea of how tough it is to be a rally car driver even if you aren’t in the top echelon of WRC teams. Personally though the most shocking part of the video to me is footage of Ken Block juggling while balancing on an exercise ball! If rally driving doesn’t work out Ken could always join the circus with cool tricks like that.
This year E3 had a ton of cool racing game products but one of my favorites was in the Playseat America booth. In case you are unaware Playseat America brought us theForza Motorsport 3 limited edition racing seat. However, the Forza 3 seat isn’t the only item in their line. They had a ton of awesome seats in their booth but to me the WRC edition seat was easily the best one, it was even upholstered in alcantara! Check out the video below for more info. We also may have a possible review coming on the Forza Motorsport 3 edition seat so stay tuned!
Ken Block and Subaru has been the hot campus couple for a while now but news came out that they broke up and Ken is already dating other OEM! You’ll never guess who it is either…Ford!! I know right?! Like OMG! Ok jokes aside this is all true. Ken Block wants to go to WRC and Ford along with Monster Energy Drink are willing to send him there. Hence the creation of his new Monster World Rally Team (or MWRT). He is looking to run a limited WRC schedule for 2010 in a Ford Focus RS but he will also still compete in Rally America and the X-Games in a rally spec Ford Fiesta similar to what Tanner Foust drove in the X-Games in ’09. Is Subaru stung by this? Maybe a little bit but they did get a decent amount of mileage from Mr. Block and his Gymkhana antics. Speaking of, the DC Shoes camp is telling us to stay tuned to another video. Will it be just as exciting with a Ford Fiesta? If anyone can find a way to make it so, its KB.
January 6, 2010-(VISTA, CA)- DC is proud to announce its 2010 sponsorship of the newly formed Monster World Rally Team (MWRT) headed by DC Co-Founder and Rally Car athlete, Ken Block. DC has sponsored Ken and its team of rally athletes for 4 years and is committed to expanding its global programs through the DC family of elite athletes. As part of the partnership, DC will produce apparel, footwear and accessories for the newly formed rally team and consumers worldwide.
“DC is proud to support Ken’s new venture into the World Rally Championship (WRC) series with his new rally team,” said DC President Anton Nistl. “Whether serving as DC’s Chief Brand Officer, creating viral videos, such as the Gymkhana series, or racing rally, Ken continues to exceed expectations and we’re sure that this new endeavor with the MWRT will be no different.”
DC will continue to create its exclusive rally products for Ken, team and crew throughout the 2010 season. Fans can look forward to an extended line of MWRT products that will be available globally through DC’s retail partners.
“I’m excited that DC is joining me on this new part of my career,” said Ken Block. “DC has supported my rally racing career from the beginning and they have developed a great rally program that will continue to grow with their support of the new Monster World Rally Team.”
Ken will compete in select races during the 2010 WRC series as well as the entire Rally America season and the Summer X Games 16. Ken will be the first American driver to campaign the WRC as part of a multi-year program. As part of his new team, Ken will drive for new auto partner, Ford Motor Company and will continue to race in the Rally America Series while competing in the WRC series.
This is the Enkei RC-T4. I really love the way this wheel looks but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you are) this wheel is meant for competition use only. Which is pretty obvious from the looks as its clearly a rally style wheel but with a bit of a stylish twist. Maybe if I ever find myself with a purpose built Evo one day I’ll pick up a set of these. In the meantime I’ll just daydream about what could have been…ahh..
Last week our good friend Bill Wood caught up to Indy Car Series Champion Scott Dixon during the media day for the Long Beach Grand Prix to get his opinion on a few other motorsports besides Indy Car. You might be surprized at his responses. Check it out below.
Even though I’m more of a closed face helmet guy if you’re into rally racing you know that open face is where its at. Arai has a pretty solid open face helmet called the GP-Jet 2. My favorite part is the adustible visor. Can anyone say Robotech?
