I’ve been waiting to see this for a while now! Joon Maengfinally released some video from his first test session in the FullTiltPoker.com/Burgenholtz Racing Mazda RX-8 drift car. I think the question of if Joon can handle all the extra power and the radically different set up has been answered. From the looks of the video you’d think Joon had been drifting RX-8s all his life! Check it out below.
I love twitter! Just found out @GReddy_Power is working on a update for the SE exhaust. Not sure what they’ll do as part of the update but I can’t wait to find out. Hopefully they’ll keep us updated.
Check it out, Mr. Joon Maeng just uploaded some recent video of the FullTiltPoker.com/Burgenholtz Racing Mazda RX-8 being tuned on the dyno by none other than Eric Hsu of Cosworth USA. Turn up the speakers and watch the beast pound the rollers to the tune of 604HP at the rear wheels!

I have no idea where or how to get this but major props to any Mazda RX-8 stateside that is rocking this Knight Sports muffler right now. Those “rotor” shaped titainium tips are fire!!
Earlier today in downtown Long Beach Bergenholtz racing made the announcement that Full Tilt Poker.com will be their team title sponsor for the 2010 Formula Drift season. This is the first non-energy drink/non-endemic sponsor to enter the series in a while which makes me feel better about the progression of the sport. For a while I thought drifting might have reached a tipping point but it looks like its still on the rise. Congrats to the Bergenholtz team and a big welcome to Full Tilt Poker to drifting!

This is hot off the digital press from the ID Agency. Burgenholtz Racing (who recently parted ways with 2009 driver Justin Pawlak) just announced that former privateer Joon Maeng will be driving for them next year in the Burgenholtz Racing Mazda RX-8! We couldn’t be happier for Joon! Go get ‘em guys..
Mazda as always done pretty well in Daytona but this Saturday at the 48th running of the famous 24 hour race Mazda is increasing their chances of a win…by 7! There will be 7 Mazda RX-8’s in the field this weekend including the highly seasoned Speedsource RX-8 which has already captured wins at Daytona and Patrick Dempsey (AKA “Dr. McDreamy) in a Dempsey racing RX-8. Should be interesting to see the RX-8’s mixing it up with the inevitable ocean of Porsches on track. Check out renderings of all 7 entrys in the pic below.
Seven Mazda RX-8 teams are entered in the Rolex 24 for the GT class. Each RX-8 is powered by a 500hp three-rotor Mazda rotary engine.
#30 The Racers Edge RX-8 featuring 2009 MX-5 Cup Champion Todd Lamb and 2009 Atlantic Champion John Edwards
#40 The Dempsey Racing RX-8 featuring America’s fastest actor, Patrick Dempsey.
#41 The second Dempsey Racing RX-8 will be run in conjunction with Team Seattle as a charity fundraiser for a children’s hospital.
#42/43 A pair of Team Sahlen RX-8s. No strangers to Mazda, the Nonnamaker Brothers will be a factor all season long. This is their race debut in an RX-8 in Grand-Am GT competition.
#69 The SpeedSource FXDD RX-8. This team won two races in 2009.
#70 The SpeedSource Castrol Syntec RX-8. The Sylvain Tremblay-led team is looking to repeat their 2008 Rolex win. Joining the team fulltime for 2010 is Jonathan Bomarito. Jonathan is a former Mazda Atlantic Championship Star.
With Tokyo Auto Salon in full effect right now I decided to comb through the “JDM” folder in my browser favorites just to see if there was anything new out there, or new to me anyway. I knew right away that Knight Sports wouldn’t disappoint. Even though the re-freshed Mazda RX-8 has been out for a little while there hasn’t been much exterior support for it so I was glad to see that Knight Sports has produced a front lip. Their lip really sets off the already aggressive design of the OEM front end and adds a new personality to it. The only problem is I don’t know of any Knight Sport distributors in the states so I have no idea how one would be able to get their hands on one of these unless you are fluent in Japanese and/or “know a guy!” Ah well, its still nice to know its out there…

One of the biggest selling points of the RX-8 besides its rev-happy rotary engine is its handling. It is one of the best handling Japanese imports one could buy. However no matter how good something is there is always room for a little improvement right? If you are looking to tighten up your RX-8’s handling even more and money isn’t too much of an object (MSRP is about $1,480) you might want to consider H&R Springs’ Street Performance coilovers. Practically everything they make is race proven and they are in the upper echelon in the quality department. Also, H&R is German and as the “sham-wow guy” says “The Germans make good stuff!”
This is 5 glorious minutes of a naturally apserated (individual throttle bodies) 4 Rotor RX-8 time attack car revving its god-like engine for a massive crowd at the 2009 Seven Stock event in Irvine California. Turn up your speakers!
