Gaming Hype Video: Codemasters F1 2011 Dev. Diary 3: Co-Op Championship Mode

Posted on 09.08.11 | Andrew Beckford No Comments

The new Co-Op Championship Mode is arguably the biggest change in Codemasters’ F1 2011 from 2010. In Co-Op mode you and your friend can race on the same team as you battle for the constructors’ championship.  However, you and your buddy are still in contention for the drivers championship as well. As it goes who ever is getting the faster lap times and winning races will become the team’s #1 driver and get all the upgrades first!

In the third development diary for F1 2011  Stephen Hood and Paul Jeal of Codemasters will tell you all about what you can expect from this new gameplay mode.

Gaming Hype: A Conversation With F1 2011 Chief Game Designer Stephen Hood

Posted on 09.07.11 | Andrew Beckford No Comments

F1 2011 by Codemasters will hit stores at the end of this month and earlier this morning we got to join in on a conference call with Chief  Game Designer Stephen Hood for a few last minute questions courtesy of Forty Seven communications.  Here is a quick break-down of what we talked about:

Safety Car

The first thing we asked about was the addition of the Safety Car.  we wanted to know what were the hurdles, if any that the team had to jump over to get the car in the game.  According to Stephen there were a few roads that needed to be crossed as far as licensing with Formula One and with Mercedes Benz.  In fact the team was already certain on including the Saftey Car weeks before it was announced, but they had to wait for the green light from both Formula 1 and Mercedes before they could make the announcement at Gamescom last month. Besides that they also wanted to be positive that they could implement the Safety Car in such a way that it would genuinely add to the game play experience instead of adding it in just to say that it was in.

Online Multiplayer Events

With games such as Madden and Modern Warfare there are sometimes online tournaments and other events such as double XP weekends.  We asked if there were plans to do anything similar with F1 2011.  The short answer is “maybe”.  Stephen definitely has interest in organizing things like that for the players and the Codemasters team is already putting their heads together on possible online mutliplayer events but it is likely that we probably won’t see anything like this until F1 2012.  Provided that Formula One gives the ok, there might even be events where players can race against the “ghost” of the real drivers based on their result from an event.  For example trying to beat the total race time of Sebastien Vettel after his victory at a given track.

Forza Motorsport 4 and F1 2012

Time was running short at this point so we asked a double whammy of two quick questions.  First, we asked Stephen what his thoughts were on Forza Motorsport 4 (coming out next month) and if he saw that game as competition for F1 2011.  After some good natured ribbing Stephen admitted that he does not see Forza as direct competition for F1 2011 because each game is offering its own unique experience.  As Stephen explains it, F1 2011 is for F1 fans and anyone who wants to try their hand at racing an F1 car while Forza is more about the car ownership and modification experience and lifestyle.  We would have to concur on that.

Finally we asked if development has already begun on F1 2012.  At this point there has not been any hard coding or design work done but F1 2012 is already in the conceptual phase and the team is already talking about what they want to add to the next installment but it is way to early to get any confirmed details.

And there we have it!  Our last minute prod to the Chief Game Designer on what we can expect for F1 2011 and future games.  If you haven’t done so already we would suggest you hit up Best Buy, Gamestop, or Amazon to pre-order your copy of F1 2012 before the first batch gets sold out!  If you still need more convincing then stay tuned for our review!

E3 2011 Hype: Codemasters F1 2011 Info And First Screen Shots!

Posted on 06.08.11 | Andrew Beckford 4 Comments

E3 2011 is underway in Los Angeles and I have made it my personal mission to get as much info on all the games and accessories relevant to gear heads as possible. So, of course I paid a visit once again to the Codemasters crew to get the scoop on F1 2011.  Unfortunately, due to FIA stipulations I could not get any video of the game in action but I do have a lovely collection of screenshots that you can view below (just click to enlarge).  I also have tons of info on F1 2011 and what you can expect.  Let me just say, any notion that F1 2011 is just going to be F1 2010 but with the new cars and liveries should be nixed right now.  The Codemasters Burmingham team made a whole host of upgrades and changes to improve the F1 experience and add even more authenticity to the new title.  What changes did they make?  I am glad that I pretended that you asked that..

New Looks
The first thing you are going to notice is that there is a lot more visual details put into F1 2011 vs F1 2010.  The racing environments are much more detailed with nuances like more realistic foliage around the tracks, current and accurate representation of each teams garage, faces of the mechanics and crew look more realistic, and they have even added the “Parc Ferme” celebrations after qualifying sessions and races.  F1 2011 continues to use Codemasters’ patented EGO engine so expect more top notch and dynamic weather effects in addition to all of the other environmental detail.

Improved handling
The Codemasters crew has taken all the feedback from F1 2010 players and made improvements to the car dynamics and handling to make driving the cars more true to life.  If you see Vettel go over the curbs at turn 3 in Valencia then you will be able to go over the curbs there as well in the game without having to worry about your car unexpectedly spinning out.  To further aid in making the handling more realistic Codemasters obtained data from Pirelli to make the tire dynamics as close to the real thing as possible.  All the tires that the drivers are currently using will be available in F1 2011.

Current rules and innovations
All the cars in the game will be as representative of the real cars as possible.  Most of all KERS, and the new DRS (Drag Resistance System) will be included.  However just like in real life players will only be able to use those features per FIA rules.  No fantasy KERS boost for the entire race or using the DRS on the first lap!

Multi-player much improved
The first major multi-player improvement for F1 2011 is the ability to do 2-player split screen mode.  With most people owning decent sized HDTVs these days, going split screen is much more feasible now than it may have been before.  Now you do not need to hop online for a quick race against your buddy.  My favorite new Multi-player feature is Co-Op career mode.  This is the icing on the cake of realism for F1 2011.  In F1 2010′s career mode you went through the entire season as a driver competing against your teammate for the attention of your engineers.  However in F1 2010 that teammate was the computer’s AI.  In the new Co-Op mode your teammate can be a friend online and you go through the season together!  In fact you can play it out exactly the way the FIA does.  Join up with your buddy on Friday for practice, come back the next day for Saturday qualifying, and race on Sunday!  You can share data and set up info as well, although you will probably be less likely to share your data once you get to the tail end of the season and realize that only one of you can be champion.

F1 2011 on the go
A while back I gave you wind of the announcement that F1 2011 will be coming to the new PlaystationVita (formerly Sony NGP)  handheld as well as the Nintendo 3DS.   I spoke with the Codemasters team on that today and they informed me that the handheld versions are being worked on by another team and will be much more accessible versions of what you would expect on consoles or the PC.  As suspected the 3DS version WILL be in 3D!  While there is not an official release ETA for the PlaystationVita I was told that players can expect the 3DS version to be available in November 2011 which is a month after the console and PC version is released.

    Hype Review: DiRT3 By Codemasters

Posted on 05.24.11 | Andrew Beckford No Comments

Today rally fans all over the world are in collective celebration as the long anticipated DiRT3 finally hit store shelves this morning.  Well I have a bit of a confession to make, I have been playing DiRT3 since the 19th!  Try not to be too upset with me though.  It was all for you.  I have been putting time into DiRT3 to see if this game is truly worth your hard earned $59.99!  So continue on for my brutally honest review of the high points and low points of the latest edition of the DiRT franchise.  If you want to skip to the conclusion just scroll all the way down to the “VERDICT” below.

    Overview:
DiRT3 is a lot like DiRT2 but with much more packed inside of it.  You still get all the rally racing action you can handle as well as truck racing and buggies.  Also, YouTube celebrity and professional hoon Ken Block remains the poster boy of the series armed with his 2011 Ford Fiesta gymkhana car as well as his Ford Focus WRC car.  You also still get to travel the world in the “DiRT Tour” and participate in several different rally-based racing disciplines.  What’s new this time around is the addition of a Drift Challenge mode and the highly anticipated Gymkhana challenge mode.

    Visuals:
The first thing you will notice about the game is the stunning visuals.  Our review copy was for Xbox 360 and it really looked like Codemasters’ “EGO” engine was taking full advantage of the 360′s graphical capabilities.  So, if you were worried about how the game will look you can put those concerns to rest right now because DiRT3 has absolutely beautiful visuals, especially with the weather effects.  The licensed cars look great, are very detailed, and have nicely designed liveries.  Some of the car liveries you will know but there are many that were created just for the game and they had me thinking about all types of real world sponsorship possibilities.  They look that good!

The scenery of the race courses are magnificent as well.  I don’t travel much so I can’t speak too much to the accuracy of the international levels such as Kenya and Finland but they look so real that I am convinced they sent out location teams all over the world to create the courses true to life as possible.  They also did an amazing creation of the LA Colosseum (the scene of last year’s summer X Games).  While the rally cross course layout is not the same that was used in the X Games it almostdoes not matter.  Almost is the key word though but I will have more on that later.  Anyhow, no matter what the course, real or fictional it all looks amazing and truly does add to the experience.  What really drives it all home is the weather effects.  There is snow, rain, mud, water, morning, and night driving and each of those add a real visceral effect to the driving experience and each weather condition has a real impact on the car’s handling!

    Game-play:
The most important game-play aspect of any racing game is how the cars feel when it comes to physics and handling.  DiRT3 is not unlike other EGO engine based games like DiRT2 or F1 2010 whereas the handling of the cars fall somewhere in-between arcade style and racing sim.  If the only racing games you have ever played are Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo then you will have a somewhat steep learning curve when it comes to getting used to the way the cars handle in DiRT3.

Because you are driving rally cars and off road trucks you need to be aware of how bouncy things can get which will really throw you for a loop when it comes to negotiating turns on bumpy dirt terrain or snow.  To help take the edge off while trying to figure things out DiRT3 has a “casual” driving mode in which most of the driving assists are turned on and will keep you from spinning out every 10 feet if you were to start things off in advanced mode right away.  Once you are used to things you can fine tune things a bit more by adjusting parameters like gear ratio, downforce, suspension, ride height, differential, and brake bias.  However, unlike hard-core sim games like Gran Turismo or Foza the adjustments are not highly incremental.  Each parameter is simplified so that everyone can understand what they are doing when they make adjustments.  Also for further clarification you can click on a parameter for a voice-over explanation of how that parameter will change the way the car handles.

When reviewing the game I played with both the Xbox 360 controller and the Xbox 360 steering wheel on our Playseat rig and while the fun factor was increased a bit while playing with the wheel; I have to say that the handling felt a little more precise when using the controller.  Although there is a whole separate menu for making adjustments to the wheel for a better feel, however there isn’t much explanation on what steering wheel parameter does what when making adjustments so if you plan on using the wheel be prepared to do some google research.

    Game Modes:
DiRT3 has several racing modes available: Rally, Rally Cross, Land Rush (trucks), Trail Blazer, Head 2 Head, Drift Challenge, and Gymkhana Challenge.  The last two being the newest additions to the DiRT franchise.  Unfortunately, those are also the sources of one of the few gripes I have with the game.  See, all the other modes are like any other type of racing in which you are up against the clock or the other cars on the course but the Drift and Gymkhana modes are points based.  The object of these modes is to drift or do gymkhana “tricks” to earn as many points as you can within a certain time limit.  There are points thresholds for bronze, silver, gold, and platinum medals.  To “pass” one of these events you need to pass the bronze level at the least.  In Drift mode you are put on a point a-to-b-to-a course where you must drift as much as you can along the way and in Gymkhana mode you are put in an arena-type setting with gymkhana obstacles to do tricks with.  On the surface with no “objectives” these modes are a blast to play, especially the Gymkhana mode but when it comes to advancing in the “DiRT Tour” mode there are some issues.

My problem with these modes is that the thresholds for the points given the time a lotted seems unbalanced which makes takes some of the fun out of these modes and makes them frustrating when you are trying to do more than just “pass” with a bronze medal.  There were some instances where it took a massive effort and multiple tries just to earn a sliver medal in both Drift and Gymkhana modes.  After having so much fun with the other modes it hurt the experience a bit to have to deal with the sudden rise in difficulty of these new modes.  It would be more understandable if the points thresholds were different depending on what driving assist mode you were in (Casual, Intermediate, or Advanced) but it is the same no matter what.  So casual players who are just looking to play through the game and have fun will have a bit of a surprise when it comes to these new modes.

If the goal is simply to make it to the next event by earning a bronze then this issue isn’t as prevalent but it is still there.  Earning a bronze will not always be a walk in the park!  I would like to see a patch to address this issue in the future some time.  However even if there is not a patch this issue is far from a deal breaker but is definitely something that should be noted.

    Multi-player:
DiRT3 provides several mutli-player options.  You can do a system-link, split screen, or online multi-player.  In either of those modes you have the choice of doing a “pro-tour” which are ranked races/matches to earn respect and move up the online leaderboards or you can do “Jam Session” where you can line up a series of events with your own rules purely for fun’s sake.  I will tell you right now that Jam Session is one of the best online multi-player experiences I’ve ever had!  All the modes in single player are there for you in Jam Session but with the new modes like Gymkhana you can change up the rules.  Instead of just earning points by doing tricks there is an “invasion” mode where you smash through as many “alien robots” as possible.  There is also an “infection” mode which is basically car-tag.  The “infected” car must hunt down non-infected car and pass on the disease by smashing into them!  One of my personal favorites is a “capture the flag” type mode in which you grab a flag and try to make it to the goal.  However, if you get hit by another player they steal the flag from you! It is beyond awesome!  You would be hard pressed to not have fun in any of the multi-player modes.

    YouTube Feature:
A new feature of DiRT3 that I think should be noted is the YouTube highlight feature.  This feature allows players to upload highlights from races and other events to YouTube all within the game.  It is pretty cool in theory but in practice it is a bit tricky to use and it can take up to several hours before your video will show up on your YouTube  channel.  However, remember that this is the first game to ever include such a feature. So, any small hicups can easily be forgiven.  Look forward to a ton of DiRT3 videos hitting the YouTube airwaves soon!

    Conclusion-Pros & Cons:

    Pros
    -The graphics are stunning
-The rally racing feels satisfying and challenging
-The selection of cars is a dream for any rally fan
-Group B cars are pure win
    -Multi-player is endless fun
    -YouTube Feature is innovative

    Cons
-Gymkhana and Drift mode difficulties are a bit unbalanced
-YouTube feature can be tricky to use
-Xbox steering wheel set up tutorial would be appreciated

    VERDICT:
DiRT3 is a solid game that delivers on pretty much everything a rally fan would want from a rally racing game.  The cars rock, the graphics are amazing, mutli-player is fun, and the overall experience is very rewarding.  Despite a few shortcomings, DiRT3 is definitely worth the asking price.  I say it is a BUY all the way!

DiRT3 is coming out next month and there are scores of Gymkhana and Rally fans waiting for its release with baited breath.  Usually when a big game release is on the horizon there is some sort of “special edition” or bundle pack offered to those who really want something collectible when they pick up the game they’ve been waiting months for.  It’s  a common practice with popular shooter franchises like Halo and Call Of Duty.  Now DiRT3 will be among that group as there will be a special bundle pack available now for pre-order in which buyers will get the game itself but also the popular Ken Block Traxxas R/C Gymkhana car.  Awesome right?!  The bundle pack will set you back $299 but before you scoff at the price you should know that the R/C car itself normally goes for 300 bucks.  So instead of thinking of it as paying $299 a game you should see it more as buying a cool R/C car and getting a $60 game for free with it!  If that wasn’t enough, pre-ordering with Game Stop will also get you several unlockable cars, tracks, and events right off the bat while the rest of the world has to earn them the legit way!

If that sounds like a good deal to you then head over to Game Stop and pre-order the bundle right now for Xbox 360 or PS3 before they run out.
