Not to be outdone by Dodge’s Charger SRT8 reveal, Chevrolet unleashed a new beast of its own in the form of the 2012 Camaro ZL1. Basically GM decided to give the Camaro the same treatment they gave the Corvette when they created the ZR1. The ZL1 will boast a 550hp/550ft-lb supercharged and intercooled V8 “LSA” engine. They haven’t released the exact displacement of the LSA but obviously its enough to produce big numbers from some boost. The power will go through a dual clutch 6 speed transmission and the suspension will feature magnetic ride control.
Chevy reps were pretty clear in communicating that the ZL1 is looking to be a world class sports car rather than a brutish muscle car but looking at this thing I’d say it could go either way really! The reps also said you can expect to see the Camaro ZL1 at dealerships in early 2012. In the meantime check out some pictures below and a few teaser videos.

Engineers have already driven Camaro ZL1 prototypes extensively at demanding road courses in the U.S. and Germany, with final testing being completed through the balance of 2011.
CHICAGO – The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 debuted today at the Chicago Auto Show. It is the highest-performing Camaro and the most technically advanced car ever developed in its class. The new ZL1 continues the momentum of Camaro, propelling it into an entirely new realm of leading-edge performance technology. It is planned to launch at the beginning of 2012.
Motivated by a supercharged V-8 engine producing an estimated 550 horsepower (410 kW), the Camaro ZL1 will be the fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet. And more than just power, the ZL1 features technologically advanced and highly developed chassis and suspension systems that help it deliver balanced, track-ready handling and braking power to complement its high engine output. Rigorous development of the ZL1 is ongoing, and official estimates of the car’s capabilities will be released later in 2011, as testing nears completion.
“Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “It’s the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we’ve chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history.”
The ZL1 name is derived from the all-aluminum racing engine of the same name, which was developed in the late 1960s and installed into a handful of regular-production 1969 Camaros. Only 69 were built with the engine, but they’ve achieved mythical status among enthusiasts, as they represented the pinnacle in Camaro performance – until now. The 2012 ZL1 model is designed to be a major leap forward for the Camaro, bringing a new level of performance capability to the segment.
The central goal of the car’s development was creating something new – a Camaro intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits and excellent driving dynamics on the street. To achieve that goal, engineers evolved many of the existing Camaro’s systems, as well as incorporated new technologies such as electric power steering and Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension system.
Camaro ZL1’s design communicates and supports its performance mission. Rather than using decorative elements, ZL1 is visually differentiated from other current Camaro models with elements vital to the car’s elevated capabilities.
“Everything about the ZL1’s design is directly related to its technology and serious performance, especially aerodynamics,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, Global Design. “Our designers’ goal was to execute that function-oriented design with beautifully sculpted forms, creating an imposing, powerful persona. Function becomes the aesthetic. The intent is a car that delivers on the attitude it projects.”
Major elements of the ZL1’s design are a new front fascia and hood with air extractors, designed in tandem to create aerodynamic downforce to aid handling. The car’s hood includes a signature center section constructed of carbon fiber and rendered in satin black finish. New rocker panels, wide tires, 20-inch wheels and exhaust tips portray the car’s handling and power.
The ZL1 badge appears on the grille, hood and the brake calipers, all key areas portraying the technology within.
Supporting the dynamic track and street performance of the ZL1 is the LSA 6.2L supercharged engine, which will produce an estimated 550 horsepower (410kW) and 550 lb.-ft. of torque (677 Nm), with specific features for the Camaro. Built on GM’s legendary all-aluminum, small-block V-8 architecture, the LSA features an intercooled supercharger system, premium heat-resistant aluminum-alloy cylinder heads and other details designed to ensure its exceptional performance is delivered with smoothness and refinement. Components and design elements that contribute to the LSA’s performance include:
Balanced, lightweight reciprocating assembly
High-strength hypereutectic pistons
Sixth-generation Eaton supercharger with four-lobe rotors
Piston oil squirters.
Because the Camaro ZL1 uses electric power steering, the engine does not incorporate a conventional hydraulic power steering pump on its accessory drive system. This enhances performance, because no engine power is used to turn a steering pump pulley.
Camaro ZL1 is a complete high-performance car, not just a Camaro with more power. Key technical highlights include:
Transmission – The high-performance Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual is matched with the LSA engine. It is the “MG9” version of the transmission, with a higher torque capacity. It is used with a dual-mass flywheel and twin-disc clutch for easy operation and shift smoothness. A new, shorter-throw shifter actuates the gear changes.
Exhaust – ZL1 is equipped with a dual-mode exhaust system, which alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm. First used on the legendary Corvette, and specifically tuned for Camaro ZL1, the dual-mode exhaust will give the car a signature sound.
Drivetrain – It is revised with a stronger driveshaft and rear axle system, featuring a larger and stronger cast iron differential housing, stronger axles and heavy-duty limited-slip differential. This patent-pending system is designed to ensure that ZL1’s tremendous power is delivered smoothly to the ground.
Suspension – The suspension features completely revised tuning and the inclusion of segment-exclusive Magnetic Ride Control. ZL1’s Magnetic Ride system will include driver selectable modes (Tour and Sport) tailored for the preferred style of driving. It uses advanced magneto-rheological science to produce shock damping with the highest level of precision, enabling body control optimized for excellent performance in everyday driving as well as track situations. This technology appears on only a small roster of some of the world’s finest performance cars. Other chassis elements are redesigned to support the car’s high-performance limits. Rear stabilizer bars have drop links repositioned outboard of the control arms. This makes the bars more effective in controlling body roll in turns, with crisp response to driver commands.
Brakes and Steering – Camaro ZL1 features an advanced track-capable braking system, developed in conjunction with experts from Brembo. The large 14.6-inch (370 mm) two-piece front rotors have six-piston calipers; the 14.4-inch (365 mm) rear rotors have four-piston calipers. ZL1 marks the entry of a new electric power steering system to Camaro. It is being developed to ensure precise control and feedback to the driver, with greater variability of effort for high-performance driving.
Exterior – ZL1’s signature from the front is the redesigned fascia and aluminum hood with a raised, carbon fiber insert. The fascia includes a front splitter and new vertical fog lamps. The fog lamp area includes air intakes designed for brake cooling. The hood features front-mounted air extractors that direct air precisely over the car. Visually, this center section, in satin black carbon fiber, communicates the car’s high-performance intent as a visual contrast to the car’s exterior color. Functionally, the air extractor is a key in connecting airflow closely to the bodywork, creating aerodynamic downforce. The carbon fiber center section reduces the mass of the hood. High-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and fog lamps are standard. The rear of the car includes a diffuser and spoiler, also functional elements that enhance the car’s aerodynamics.
Wheels and Tires – New-design, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, which are lighter than the 20-inch wheels used on the Camaro SS, are used with new Goodyear Supercar F2 ties developed specifically for the ZL1.
Interior – ZL1 is tailored for high-performance driving. The front seats feature microfiber suede inserts. Other enhancements include a redesigned steering wheel, alloy pedals, Head-Up Display with unique performance readouts and the “four-pack” auxiliary gauge system featuring a boost readout.
All of the Camaro exterior colors will be offered with the ZL1, but black is the only interior color. The unique exterior features are complemented with a black center section on the hood. Inside, the Camaro ZL1 has heated leather seats with microfiber inserts and ZL1 logos embroidered on the front headrests. Microfiber suede is repeated as an accent on the instrument panel, adding a richer look to the interior. The ZL1 will include the same content as the current 2SS package and include the following new or unique features:
Six-way power driver and passenger seats
Unique instrument panel and door panel inserts; and ZL1-logo sill plates
Steering wheel audio controls with Bluetooth capability
Wireless PDIM and USB-port
Boston Acoustics premium audio system
Rear parking assist

AMG has blessed the new Mercedes Benz C-Class and transformed it into the 2012 C63. Just like before the 2012 C63 will have the same 451HP V8 but there is a performance package option that will increase power to 481hp. What’s in the performance package that gives you the extra ”oompf”? Well for starters they throw in the same forged pistons, rods, and crankshaft that are used in the SLS Gullwing. Then, they add a “variable intake manifold” which is painted titanium grey. All of the grunt from the engine will be put to the ground via AMG’s “SPEEDSHIFT MCT” 7-speed transmission. If you spring for the performance package the C63 will get you from a stand still to 60mph in about 4.3 seconds.
The styling is still as tough you would come to expect from an AMG variant. The C63′s bodylines are very ”angular and beautiful” as Dieter would say (that’s a Mike Myers joke by the way). They’ve updated the gril to be consistant with the SLS styling and it has a SLS style steering wheel waiting for you inside as well. There are a few color options you can go with for the upholstery as you’ll see in a few of the pics below. All in all AMG put together a nice setup in the new hot rod. The 2012 C63 should hit dealerships this fall but so far Mercedes Benz hasn’t announced an MSRP. However, I’m going to go ahead and guess that the sticker price will be north of $60k.
The high-performance Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sedan is now more attractive than ever thanks to restyling for the 2012MY. The C63 AMG sedan is complemented by numerous enhancements help maximize performance while significantly reducing fuel consumption. The sedan now features the award-winning AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with standard “Controlled Efficiency” mode along with a new power steering pump that helps reduce the combined fuel consumption by about ten percent (estimated figured for U.S. models pending). The output of the AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine is unchanged at 451 hp and can be increased to a maximum of 481 hp with the optional AMG Development Package. Agility, grip and ride comfort have been enhanced as a result of numerous measures to optimize the AMG sports suspension. New assistance systems and a new generation of telematics increase both safety and comfort. The U.S. market launch for the 2012 C63 AMG Sedan begins in autumn.
The 2012 C63 AMG sedan features a new radiator grille with a large Mercedes star and a single transverse louvre, as well as a new AMG front apron with a lower cross member painted in high-gloss black. Additionally highlights include special AMG daytime running lights and side air outlets which recall those found on the SL63 AMG high-performance roadster. New clear-lens headlamps emphasize the car’s distinctive, confident presence especially when equipped with the optional Lighting Package featuring bi-xenon headlamps. The wide front fenders with the “6.3 AMG” badge and the new 5 twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels — , finished in titanium grey. Good contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 and 255/35 R 18 tires at the front and rear.
The rear of the C63 AMG now features a new AMG rear apron featuring a distinctive, black diffuser insert with three pronounced fins.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission from the SL63 AMG
Under the skin, the top C-Class model boasts a wealth of new technology including the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission – another advanced feature adopted from the SL63 AMG. This innovative transmission uses a wet start-up clutch in place of a traditional torque converter to deliver a much more efficient, agile and direct response. Fuel consumption and emissions have been reduced thanks to the “Controlled Efficiency” mode and a new power steering pump.
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission impresses with its exceptional flexibility: with four driving modes as well as rev-matching and RACE START functions, it delivers comfortable shifts around town as well as instant response in high performance driving situations. The Controlled Efficiency “C” mode is programmed to provide smooth, comfortable upshifts while maintaining the lowest possible engine speed to help maximize fuel efficiency. The “S”, “S+” and “M” modes deliver increased agility through fast, responsive gear changes and higher revs. Gear changes in the “S+” and “M” modes take just 0.1 seconds.

AMG Development Package: technology transfer from the SLS AMG
Even more dramatic performance is available with the optional AMG Development Package offering 481 hp and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.3 seconds. The Mercedes- AMG engine experts have achieved this increase in output thanks to a technology transfer from the SLS AMG with forged pistons, connecting rods and the lightweight crankshaft all coming from the gullwing model’s engine. The reduced mass inertia of the components – which are 6.6 pounds lighter than those of the standard version – allows the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine to rev up with even greater ease and agility. Models equipped with the Development Package can be identified by the variable intake manifold painted in titanium grey under the hood, the AMG high-performance braking system with two-piece front discs and red painted brake calipers at all four corners, a carbon-fiber spoiler lip on the trunk lid and the AMG performance steering wheel in premium leather with a unique grip area.

Optimized suspension, new steering system reduces fuel consumption
The AMG sports suspension includes a redesigned front axle, reinforced rear axle and wider front and rear track has undergone thorough modification and offers greater driving enjoyment and ride comfort at all times. The new stiffer elastokinematics, revised axle kinematics with more negative camber and new rear-axle anti-roll bar with a larger cross-section, result in higher agility and greater lateral acceleration. Additionally, new spring and damper rates have optimized both the responsiveness of the suspension as well as the road noise and tire vibration characteristics.
The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a direct ratio (13.5 : 1) has a redesigned power-steering pump which contributes to reduced fuel consumption. This new pump only requires energy when the driver is actually making steering movements. Reliable deceleration at all times is provided by the AMG highperformance braking system with internally ventilated and perforated discs all around.
High Quality Interior
Even a quick glance at the interior of the 2012 C63 AMG sedan reveals the considerable updates, such as the completely new dashboard design with an integrated screen. The new 3D color TFT display in the middle of the redesigned speedometer welcomes the driver upon entry with the AMG logo. The new threespoke AMG performance steering wheel – a feature adopted from the CLS63 AMG – is trimmed in premium leather and features metallic trim elements with a flattened top and bottom sections as well as grip areas which are specially shaped and trimmed in perforated leather for perfect steering control. Aluminum shift paddles facilitate manual gear changes.
Fine trim elements in brushed dark aluminum are found on the dashboard and doors. Situated in the center console surrounded by high-gloss black piano lacquer trim is the new rotary control for selecting the transmission modes C, S, S+, M and RACE START. The special AMG sports seats with integrated head restraints and adaptive backrests are available from launch with combined M-B Tex/DINAMICA black upholstery. (DINAMICA is a new type of breathable manmade fiber). The side bolsters of the AMG sports seats are covered in M-B Tex while the center panels of the seat cushions are also upholstered with DINAMICA.
Available as an option, designo leather appointments give the interior of the C63 AMG a very exclusive character: four single colors and three two-tone combinations are available. As a further option, these can be complemented with “extended black designo leather appointments” for the top section of the dashboard and the upper section of the door linings.
Five new driver assistance systems already established in the S-Class and CLS
The 2012 C63 AMG features five new driver assistance systems which are already established in the S-Class flagship model line and the trend-setting CLS. These assistance systems use the latest camera and sensor technology and are designed to combat common causes of accidents. They raise the safety of the C-Class to a new level by warning the driver of a hazard.

The C-Class sees the debut of a new telematics generation which will gradually be introduced in other model series. The navigation system of COMAND Online also has added functions including a 3D display with virtual city views, eco-routes and the ability to add waypoints along your journey.
C63 AMG – fast-track to best-seller status
Launched in the U.S. in April 2008, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG rapidly established itself within the performance sedan segment. Over the past three and a half years more than 17,000 AMG enthusiasts world-wide have purchased the C63 AMG. The AMG Development Package has proven especially popular, with over 30 percent of all the C63 AMG models delivered in 2010 featuring this attractive option.
The U.S. market launch for the 2012 C63 AMG Sedan begins in autumn.
Hot on the heels of Porsche’s release of their “Black Edition” 911 and Pagani’s release of the new Huayra, Lamborghini has a new release of their own. Lamborghini will release the Gallardo “Bicolore” for European and Asian-Pacific markets on a LP560-4 base Gallardo while in America the Bicolore will only be on the LP550-2 base Gallardo (the same base that the Balboni edition is built on0. As the name suggests the Bicolore is all about showing off a special edition two-toned paint job that carries into the interior. They haven’t released how many examples will be produced in this color way but I would imagine that it will be quite small if they want to keep that limited edition appeal.
All Bicolore’s will be coated from the window line up in “Noctis Black” while the bottom half can be sprayed in one of 5 optional colors: Giallo Midas, Arancio Borealis, Grigio Telesto, Bianco Monocerus, and Blu Caelum. If you speak Italian then you know what each of those colors look like. If not, then I suggest you google it! The Bicolore will make its public debut at the Qutar Motor Show which I believe is going on right now. Although what everyone is really looking forward to is the Geneva Motor Show next month when Lamborghini will finally pull the cover off the new V12 replacement to the Murcielago. Stay tuned!

Most of us have been waiting with baited breath to see what the successor to the 612 Scaglietti would be. Today we get our answer: a sleek shooting-brake-ish hatchback contraption called the “FF”. As usual with new launches Ferrari has created a microsite for the new FF that throughly informs the user of all the awesome that is the “FF”. Just incase you don’t feel like an extra click here are the cliff notes: V12 engine with 650hp and 504 ft-lbs of torque mated to an all-wheel-drive set up and a top speed of 208mph. Aston Martin has confirmed that the Cygnet will see production in 2011 and will be built at Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters. Aston Martin intends to position the Cygnet as a “luxury city car” and I for one am all for it! B-segment cars have done well here since Scion busted the doors open on that market a few years back but for the most part they’ve been positioned as economical albeit whimsical alternatives to gas guzzlers. I think it s refreshing to see Aston Martin take that segment into a new direction without letting the fear of brand dilution get in the way. Besides, even though there is no official word on MSRP I doubt the Cygnet will be cheap. So far there isn’t any word about seeing the Cygnet in the states but I sure hope so! I’d rock it..
For only the fourth time in history Porsche is giving the “Speedster” name to a new model and going off the pictures alone it looks like that name is well deserved. The new speedster will make its debut at the Paris Auto show this year and according to Porsche the new Speedster was created specifically for the U.S. market. This isn’t surprising since the Speedster was originally brought to the U.S. by an importer from New York and the style became the most popular in Southern California.
If you want one you need to be quick and you need to be rich. Quick because out of the 356 that will be built worldwide only 100 will reach U.S. soil. Rich because the MSRP is just over $200k. Factor in the Speedster’s rarity and you can expect to pay a pretty fat premium on top of that. The rest of us will just have to enjoy these amazing pictures of the new Speedster. ATLANTA – September 21, 2010 – Paying homage to the first Porsche model to bear the Speedster name – the 356 Speedster – Porsche has announced that a new 911 Speedster will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in early October. Significantly different from other members of the 911 family, this two-seat roadster features a 2.36″ (60 millimeter) lower, more raked windscreen and the characteristic speedster double-bubble hardcover for the manual soft top. Helping to define the striking profile of the new 2011 911 Speedster, the 1.73″ (44 millimeter) wide-body from the AWD 911 models makes the rear-wheel-drive only Speedster stand out even more. The production run of this special car will be limited to 356 units worldwide, with approximately 100 heading to the U.S.
Fourth Edition of a Sports Car Legend
The new 911 speedster combines the classic features of the now well-known Speedster series with improved performance over the current 911 generation: The 3.8-liter flat six engine delivers 408 horsepower (hp), 23 hp more in comparison with the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, yet is EPA rated the same at 19 mpg city / 27 mpg highway. The 2011 Speedster reaches 0-60 MPH in 4.2 seconds with Sport Chrono Plus and has a top-track speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) – all courtesy of Porsche Intelligent Performance.
The seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission transmits power to the rear axle with a limited-slip differential lock, also included as standard equipment. A six-speed manual transmission is not available. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) are standard, too. Add to that exemplary protection for driver and passengers in the new 911 Speedster as Porsche engineers improved the rollover protection system which is standard in all open-top Porsche cars.
Original Speedster – Created Especially for the U.S.
In 1953, the Speedster series was launched as purist sports car based on the Porsche 356. New York Porsche importer Max Hoffman envisioned a lightweight 356 cabriolet that would look and perform in America like no other sports car. The car Porsche created had two sports bucket seats, doors with slide-in plastic windows and a shortened, elegantly curved windscreen and proved to be quite popular, especially in southern California.
In 1988, the second Speedster, this time based on the 911 Carrera, celebrated its revival with an added feature: the characteristic double bubbles. In 1993/1994, the next evolutionary stage of the 911 Carrera was ushered in with the third Speedster edition.
The conception of the current Speedster comes from Porsche Exclusive – the department specializing in individualization of all Porsche cars and limited production models like the 911 Speedster. The 2011 Speedster heralds the 25th anniversary of Porsche Exclusive which will be celebrated in 2011, and once again, demonstrates the small-series competence of Porsche Exclusive after the European success of the 2010 911 Sport Classic. Living up to the Porsche Exclusive standard, the 911 Speedster features almost all optional equipment of the 911 series and its appeal also comes from its meticulously hand-finished interior in black smooth-finish leather with numerous exterior color painted details exclusive to the Speedster. These include decorative designs with checkerboard patterns in the seat center-section of the adaptive sports seats suggestive of a checkered flag, and the leather side bolsters in the exterior color.
The sporty flavor is further enhanced by the exterior color “Pure Blue” which has been developed exclusively for the Speedster, providing an intriguing contrast with the tinted front lights, black headlight rings, black windscreen surround and other black decorative designs. Upon request, the Speedster is available in Carrara White, at no extra cost. It also features a special front apron, specific sideskirts and a distinct rear apron.
In the U.S., the 911 Carrera Speedster will be available beginning in early 2011, MSRP will be $204,000.

An exclusive XKR – the XKR 75 – will make its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 2.
Jaguar Land Rover’s new CEO, Dr Ralf Speth, initiated the challenge to the Jaguar engineering team to construct an XKR to celebrate Jaguar’s 75th anniversary, which would deliver a combination of enhanced performance, superb chassis and steering control and grip levels to inspire the driving enthusiast to explore the true potential of the XKR’s capabilities.
Mike O’Driscoll, managing director, Jaguar Cars, said “”The XKR 75 will provide owners with exclusivity, excitement and a hint of Jaguar’s great heritage. This is a fitting way to celebrate the sporting credentials of the XK marque in the 75th year of the Jaguar name”, he continued.
Jaguar engineers increased the power and torque of the acclaimed 5.0-litre supercharged engine to 530PS and 655Nm respectively for the XKR 75, to deliver truly outstanding performance. While the limited edition model’s top speed is electronically limited to 174mph (280km/h), the XKR 75′s 0-60mph (100km/h) acceleration time is reduced from 4.6 to 4.4 seconds compared to the standard 510 PS XKR.
Using the rigid lightweight aluminium architecture of the XK as a solid foundation, the increased power of the XKR 75 is matched by an agile, dynamic chassis that handles supremely, rides exceptionally well and stops with surefooted reassurance time after time.
The Jaguar XKR 75 features revised suspension and handling for increased precision and agility in addition to the performance enhancements. To ensure the XKR 75 remains stable at high speeds, a revised aerodynamic body pack with a front splitter, side sills extensions, a rear diffuser and larger rear spoiler provide increased balance and a reduction in lift. The XKR’s computerised Active Differential Control also adjusts to reduce steering sensitivity at very high speeds, further improving stability and driver control.
And with an improved acoustics package for the semi-active sports exhaust, the XKR 75 produces a pulse-racing growl to match its performance. The car’s driver-focussed character, however, has not been achieved at the expense of the Jaguar traditional values of refinement and comfort.

The XKR 75 features a new Stratus Grey finish. Red brake callipers contrast the eye-catching 20-inch gloss Vortex forged lightweight alloys with a dark technical finish and diamond turn. Customers will have the option to apply a unique body graphic that runs from the front bumper to the rear haunches.
The XKR 75′s interior completes the driver-focussed performance environment finished in Charcoal with ivory stitch, piano black finish to facia and centre console and a Jet suedecloth headlining.

No, you haven’t suddenly become illiterate. That is in fact a “2″ not a “3″ in front of that “GT” and behind that “RS”. Could it mean a lighter, more powerful version of ’ ultimate twin-turbo beast? Yes Virgina, there is a new supercar.. The 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS recently broke cover due to some cell-phone spy shots at a recent dealer conference so Porsche decided to fully yank the curtain off and debut the new turbo-beast. So what do we get in the GT2 RS? How about 90 extra horses and a diet of 154lbs. Sprinkle in some carbon fiber, alcantara, a roll cage, a $245,000 MSRP, and you have the new subject of our automotive wet dreams. I usually hate getting press releases over the weekend but I’ll have to make an exception for this! Audi hit the automotive world with a surprise attack and announced the Audi R8 GT. What does the GT mean? How about a 200lb diet, a boost in horsepower (now 560HP compared to 525HP on the base), and a top speed just under 200mph! Not to mention a re-worked exterior and a gaggle of limited edition interior pieces. Including the production number on the top of the shift knob!! Oh, and one more thing… You can order a “race package” with the R8 GT that includes a full roll cage and harness with a rotary buckle and for a bit of comfort a bluetooth microphone integrated into the harness strap! Only 333 will be produced and the price in Germany is about €193,000 which is about $256,000. It isn’t mentioned in the press release but I’m sure at least a few of these will show up state side. All I can do is stare at the glorious pictures below and wonder about what could have been. Oh Audi, why do you hurt so good?

INGOLSTADT, Germany, May 1, 2010 – Now even more powerful, lighter and faster: Audi presents a limited-production version of it R8 high-performance sports car, the R8 GT. The output of its 5.2-liter V10 has been increased to 412 kW (560 hp); vehicle weight has been reduced by roughly 100 kilograms (220.46 lb). The R8 GT accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 320 km/h (198.84 mph).
The R8 high-performance sports car has been a winner from the very beginning. This applies to both the production models, winners of the “World Performance Car” Award in 2008 (R8) and in 2010 (R8 V10), and to the race car, the R8 LMS, which won 23 races in its first season and claimed three championships. The genes of the race version are now coming to the street – in the R8 GT. The exclusive series is limited to 333 units. Each R8 GT has a badge with its production number on the shift lever knob.
Consistent use of lightweight construction: 100 kilograms (220.46 lb) trimmed
The production R8 5.2 FSI quattro is already a shining example of the Audi’s lightweight construction philosophy. Its aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) body weighs only 210 kilograms (462.97 lb). The aluminum body panels are joined to the frame of extruded profiles and cast nodes by means of positive and friction connections. The engine frame is made of ultra lightweight magnesium.
The ASF body is largely hand-built at the Neckarsulm plant in a complex manufacturing process. The extremely high strength of the body is the basis for the high-performance sports car’s precise handling, and it also offers good vibration comfort and first-rate crash safety.
Thanks to the ASF body, the production R8 5.2 FSI quattro weighs only 1,625 kilograms (3,582.51 lb) – with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and optional R tronic transmission. This made it all the more difficult for the engineers to once again achieve substantial weight savings. They took an elaborate approach involving every aspect of the vehicle, and in the end the scales came to rest at 1,525 kilograms (3,362.05 lb).
The windshield of the R8 GT is made of thinner glass; the bulkhead between the passenger cell and engine compartment, as well as the window in the rear hatch are made of strong, lightweight polycarbonate. These three modifications saved nine kilograms (19.84 lb). The fixed rear wing is good for an additional 1.2 kilograms (2.65 lb); thinner sheet metal and additional cutouts shaved 2.6 kilograms (5.73 lb) from the aluminum hatch over the 100 liter (3.53 cu ft) luggage compartment at the front of the car.
The long rear hatch is made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) – an advantage of 6.6 kilograms (14.55 lb). The rear bumper and the sideblades of this same material save an additional 5.2 and 1.5 kilograms (11.46 and 3.31 lb), respectively. With its minimal weight and extremely high strength, CFRP is the ideal material for a high-performance sports car, and Audi has broad-based expertise in its use.
The engineers also fought to shave every possible gram of weight from the technical components of R8. They shaved one kilogram (2.20 lb) from the power brake system, four kilograms (8.82 lb) from the aluminum caps of the brake discs and 9.4 kilograms (20.72 lb) from the battery. The engineers also found 2.3 kilograms (5.07 lb) in the air intake module and 2.8 kilograms (6.17 lb) in the insulation of the engine compartment.
The interior also harbored substantial weight-savings potential. The new, lightweight carpeting accounts for 7.9 kilograms (17.42 lb); the bucket seats with a chassis of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) account for 31.5 kilograms (69.45 lb). Numerous additional detailed measures targeted the interior, the exterior and the technology, such as higher-grade, lighter steel for the exhaust system’s tailpipes.
Even sharper and more effective: the design
The design of the Audi R8 GT is the expression of concentrated power – a beautiful, technical sculpture measuring 4.43 meters (14.53 ft) long, 1.93 meters (6.33 ft) wide and only 1.23 meters (4.04 ft) high. The exterior underwent numerous modifications that further sharpened the appearance. Many of them also reduce the weight and enhance the aerodynamics. The R8 GT produces even more downforce when driven fast than the production model – without any increase in the Cd value (0.36) or frontal area (1.99 m2) (21.42 sq ft).
The frame of the single-frame grille, its struts and the slats in the air intakes are finished in matt titanium gray; the grille is painted matt black. The splitter under the bumper has a double lip and is made of carbon. Slender, curved flics at the corners of the nose increase the downforce on the front axle and are also made of a carbon fiber composite.
One highlight of the R8 GT are the standard LED headlights, which use light-emitting diodes for all functions. They produce bright, homogeneous light, have a long service life and low energy consumption. The headlights also have an attractive and distinctive appearance. The daytime running lights each comprise 24 LEDs and appear as a continuous band. The reflectors are reminiscent of open mussel shells.
The defining element of the side view are the sideblades, which direct air to the engine and in the R8 GT are also made of matte carbon. The same material is used for the reduced-size housing of the side mirrors, which are mounted on an aluminum base. The 19-inch wheels feature an exclusive five twin-spoke Y design in a titanium-look finish. The front fenders sport “GT” badges.
The modifications to the rear of the car are particularly apparent, beginning with the fixed wing of matte carbon. The ventilation louvers on both sides of the rear hatch and the CFRP bumper, which integrates the large, round tailpipes and vents for the wheel wells, have been redesigned. The larger diffuser is made of carbon fiber composite; the license plate bezel and the wide slats at the rear are in matte titanium gray. The tail lights, which also use LED technology, have dark housings with panes of clear glass.
Audi offers the R8 GT in a choice of four body colors: Samoa Orange metallic, Suzuka Gray metallic, Ice Silver metallic and Phantom Black pearl effect
Breathtakingly powerful: the 412 kW (560 hp) 5.2 FSI
The modified V10, whose cylinder head covers are painted red, gives the Audi R8 GT breathtaking performance. The R8 GT sprints from a standing start to highway speed in 3.6 seconds, and from zero to 200 km/h (124.27 mph) in 10.8 seconds. And the thrust does not let up until the top speed of 320 km/h (198.84 mph) is reached.
Changes to the engine electronics coaxed an additional 26 kW from the ten-cylinder, which now produces 412 kW (560 hp) from a displacement of 5,204 cc. The torque curve peaks at 540 Nm (398.28 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm, 10 Nm (7.38 lb-ft) more than in the production version. The V10 has a specific power output of 79.2 kW (107.6 hp) per liter displacement. Its power-to-weight ratio is 3.70 kilograms (8.16 lb) per kW or 2.72 kilograms (6.00 lb) per hp. The engine redlines at 8,700 rpm.
The long-stroke engine (bore x stroke 84.5 x 92.8 millimeters [3.33 x 3.65 in]), which is hand-built at the factory in Györ, Hungary, features a crankcase made of a aluminum-silicon alloy that is both lightweight and very strong. A bedplate – a frame for the crankshaft bearing bridges – further enhances its rigidity. The complete engine weighs only 258 kilograms (568.79 lb). It is characterized by a cylinder angle of 90 degrees and dry-sump lubrication, which uses a highly efficient oil pump module. Both solutions lower the center of gravity and thus improve driving dynamics.
The crankshaft is designed as a common pin shaft. The connecting rods of the opposing pistons engage a common crankpin, resulting in alternating firing intervals of 54 and 90 degrees. This unique rhythm gives the V10 its fascinating sound – a grand, technical music very much like that in racing. Two flaps in the exhaust system modulate its volume and tone as a function of load and engine speed.
The normally aspirated engine consumes an average of 13.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (17.17 US mpg) – very good fuel economy given the tremendous power. The FSI gasoline direct injection system injects the fuel into the combustion chambers at up to 120 bar of pressure. The turbulent mixture cools the cylinder walls, enabling a compression ratio of 12.5:1. A variable intake manifold and the continuous adjustment of the chain-driven camshafts ensure that the combustion chambers are fully filled. Flaps in the intake ports facilitate the formation of the mixture by inducing a tumbling motion in the inflowing air.
The drivetrain: uncompromising traction
Gear changes in the R8 GT are handled by the R tronic sequential manual transmission. The electrohydraulic clutch and switching unit receive their commands electronically. It changes its six gears much faster than a skilled driver could – within a tenth of a second at high load and engine speed.
The electronic management system offers an automatic mode with the Sport and Normal characteristics, and two manual levels. It is controlled using the short gear selector lever on the center tunnel and two paddles on the steering wheel. Maximum thrust when starting is ensured by Launch Control – a program that manages full acceleration with high engine speed and minimum wheel slip when starting.
quattro permanent all-wheel drive is the ideal technology for a high-performance sports car. The central viscous coupling located at the front differential sends 15 percent of the power to the front axle and 85 percent to the rear axle during normal driving. This split harmonizes perfectly with the Audi R8 GT’s 43:57 percent weight distribution. The coupling sends as much as 30 percent of the power to the front wheels within milliseconds, if necessary. A mechanical locking differential at the rear axle further improves traction. It provides up to 25 percent lockup when accelerating and up to 40 percent on the overrun.
Chassis even tauter and more precise
The Audi R8 GT high-performance sports car is a driving machine with breathtaking lateral acceleration and lightning-fast, nearly instantaneous reactions. Its engine is mid-mounted close to the vertical axis; its mass is almost negligible during fast direction changes. The R8 GT is dynamic, precise and stable in almost every situation.
The chassis follows the classic racing design – double wishbones made of aluminum locate the wheels. The hydraulic, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering has a direct 16.3:1 ratio and connects the driver closely and precisely with the road. A manually adjustable coilover suspension, which lowers the body by as much as 10 millimeters (0.39 in), is standard. Higher front and rear wheel camber rates make the handling a tick more agile than with the standard model.
The 19-inch forged wheels are 8.5 J x 19 up front and 11 J x 19 at the rear, and are shod with size 235/35 and 295/30 tires, respectively. Audi will mount 305/30 tires together with optional wheels on the rear axle upon request. Cup tires, which offer the ultimate in performance on dry roads, are available for racing enthusiasts.
Audi mounts internally ventilated, carbon fiber ceramic brake disks standard. They are extremely durable and abrasion-resistant as well as particularly lightweight. Together they weigh nine kilograms (19.84 lb) less than their steel counterparts of the same size. They measure 380 millimeters (14.96 in) in diameter up front and 356 millimeters (14.02 in) at the rear. The friction rings are bolted to the stainless steel caps via elastic elements. Red anodized aluminum brake calipers – with six pistons up front – are exclusive to the R8 GT.
The ESP stabilization program has been specially tuned to the R8 GT and can be switched into a Sport mode at the push of a button to allow spectacular, but safe, oversteer when accelerating out of a corner. The driver can deactivate the system entirely for a trip to the race track.
Exclusive and dynamic: interior and equipment
At Audi, reducing weight means increasing performance and efficiency, but not sacrifice. The Audi R8 GT, which Audi sells in Germany for €193,000, comes with an automatic climate control system and power windows, a navigation system with MMI operating logic and a powerful sound system. A 465 watt, ten-channel Bang & Olufsen sound system, a CD changer and the Audi Music Interface are available as options. As always with Audi, the interior shows loving attention to detail. Rich materials spoil the occupants with a fine look and feel.
The ergonomic interior is adorned in sporty black and dark gray. The steering wheel, the headliner, the roof posts, the knee pad, the parking brake lever and the bucket seats are covered with Alcantara accented with contrasting stitching. A synthetic sharkskin-look material that feels slightly rough to the touch is applied to the bulkhead, the door liners, the instrument cowl and the dashboard. The “monoposto” – the arch in the cockpit – is made of matt carbon.
The instrument cluster features white dials with “R8 GT” badges. The newly designed selector lever is made of CFRP and aluminum; the center tunnel and the door liners sport decorative inlays in the body color. The door sills feature trims of matt aluminum decorated with the “R8 GT” logo.
A number of exclusive features are available as options for the R8 GT. Exterior options include two alternative wheels, a body-color front splitter and a CFRP engine compartment lining. Carbon elements on the doors, the tunnel, in the cockpit and on the instrument panel are available as interior options. Others include a multifunction leather steering wheel, seat belts in red, orange or gray, floor mats with the “R8 GT” logo and CFRP door sill trims illuminated in red. If desired, Audi will fit seats with carbon frames, which are somewhat lighter than the CFRP shells. The Alcantara seat covers are optionally available with an embroidered “R8 GT” logo.
A race package is available for racing enthusiasts. It includes a bolt-in roll bar in red or black, which has both road and type approval, as well as road-approved four-point belts in red or black, a fire extinguisher and a kill switch for the battery. An optional front bar module for motorsports evens includes a rotary lock for the four-point seatbelt and turns the roll bar into a full cage. Got another late night New York Auto Show preview for you guys. Subaru released an early picture of the 2011 Impreza WRX. It looks like Subaru decided to give the new models a widebody design in order to increase the track of the tires for better handling. Both the sedan and 5 door hatch models will feature the widebody design although there have been no pictures of the hatchback released as of yet. I reckon we won’t see any leaks of that until right before the show. This new design is definitely a step in the right direction. I predict many suby owners looking for a quick sale or trade in so they can get into a 2011 model.
Subaru Introduces 2011 Impreza® WRX® Models With New Wide-Body Designs and Enhanced Handling Performance

NEW YORK, March 22 /PRNewswire/ — Subaru of America, Inc. today introduced the new 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX models, which now use a wide-body design like the brand’s iconic WRX STI® performance flagship model. The wider body designs give the 2011 WRX an aggressive road presence and also allow wider track dimensions.
An approximately 1.5-inch increase in front and rear track, firmer rear subframe bushings and wider 17-inch wheels and tires deliver improved grip in the 2011 WRX. The standard wheels are now 17 x 8-in. vs. 17 x 7-in. in the 2010 model, and tire size is now 235/45R17 vs. 225/45R17.
“The new wide-body designs mark another major step on the continuous evolution of the WRX to give driving enthusiasts an even more compelling all-wheel drive performance package,” said Tom Doll, executive vice president and COO of Subaru of America, Inc.
The 2011 Impreza WRX 4- and 5-door models arrive in Subaru dealerships this summer. Both are powered by a 265-hp turbocharged/intercooled 2.5-liter 4-cyl. SUBARU-BOXER® engine teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission. This highly responsive engine produces 244 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.
The WRX has been the focus of continuous improvement since its introduction. Most recently, the 2009 model received the 265-hp engine and a significant chassis tuning upgrade. For 2010, the new Limited trim lines expanded the WRX model’s appeal to a broader range of driving enthusiasts.
The 2011 Impreza WRX uses the Continuous AWD version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. A viscous coupling locking center differential nominally distributes torque 50:50. Should slippage occur, this system transfers more power to the wheels with the best traction.
The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system is standard. Incline Start Assist, featured on all Impreza models equipped with a manual transmission, can momentarily prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when being driven away from a stop on an incline.
New Designs for 2011
Both the WRX 5-door model and 4-door model will now feature a wide-body design for 2011 similar to that of the WRX STI, underscoring the high-performance character of both models . The new design is based on a “wide and low” concept and gives both cars an aggressive street presence. The design also maintains a consistent flow from front to rear bumper, creating a distinctive identity and a sense of stability in the vehicles.
Significantly, curb weight for the 2011 WRX models increases by just 33 pounds over the “original body” 2010 models, preserving their powerful acceleration performance.
In front, the 2011 WRX models feature sharpened bumper corners and wider, blacked-out fog lamp nacelles to accentuate the “wide and low” profile. A jutting lip spoiler with three-dimensional detailing emphasizes the cars’ sporty intent. The newly designed front grille with black base and blacked-out Subaru wing highlights the headlights’ shape to give the entire front end a more powerful appearance, accentuated by larger grille and bumper intake openings.
For the 2011 WRX 4-door model, the wider fenders are stretched out on the side more than the tail lamps, accentuating a look of stability. The new design details contribute to an improved drag coefficient.
Sporty, Spacious and Versatile Interior
In the WRX models, exclusive carbon black checkered upholstery accented by red stitching sets the tone for the sporty interior. The compact layout of the double-wishbone rear suspension helps to minimize intrusion into the cargo area, providing a wide and deep luggage compartment. In the 5-door, the wide and flat load floor can accommodate two Tour-size golf bags with the rear seat backs in the upright position. In the 4-door, which is 6.5-inches longer than the 5-door, the trunk can accommodate three Tour-size golf bags. A 60/40-split folding rear seat further boosts cargo capacity and convenience in both models and the 4-door also features a rear seat fold-down center armrest.
All WRX models are equipped with standard aluminum-alloy pedal covers and driver’s footrest. Performance-design front seats integrate the backrest and head restraint into a single structure. As a sporty accent, the instrument panel electroluminescent gauges use indicator needles that sweep the gauge faces upon engine startup.
The standard tilt and telescopic steering wheel is a three-spoke, leather-wrapped design and features control switches for Bluetooth® hands-free phone function. A new AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player features Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free calling, iPod control capability, a USB port, 3.5mm aux. input jack and has XM/SIRIUS satellite radio capability (subscription is extra). An available navigation system integrates a vehicle information center and Bluetooth hands-free calling.
