This was definitely an interesting year for Long Beach. After the Grand Prix Association announced that they were splitting ways with Toyota after a 44 year relationship. A few months later it was announced that Acura would be taking over as the title sponsor. With Honda’s American HQ being local to the area and their involvement in both Indy Car and IMSA sportscar, the brand was a natural fit.
So did Acura and the Grand Prix Association put on a good show? I would give a solid “yes” to that. Though there is always room for improvement. My biggest hope is that Acura finds a way to bring back the celebrity race that was a staple of the event for so many decades. I don’t know about you but I would love to see a field of celebs pinballing around Long Beach in a fleet of Honda Civic Si hatchbacks, wouldn’t you?
I spent the weekend exploring the 1.986 mile, 12-turn street course shooting as much of the track action as I could point a lens at. Speaking of, I had a ton of help with photography as Sony was on hand and lent me a Sony Alpha A7III along with a small army of lenses. So, if my pictures look especially sweet this year, you can thank them for any boost in quality.
Also, as you’ll probably note from the title of this post, this isn’t the only gallery from the event. Stay tuned for another track gallery from Saturday. I also covered the Mother’s Exotic Car paddock. That gallery will actually be going up over on Super Street. I’ll post a link on twitter once that goes up.
For now feel free to scroll below and check out the first gallery!
