If you’re a Patriots fan, then you probably enjoyed the absolute snooze fest that was the Super Bowl yesterday. If you’re anyone else then you were probably looking forward to the commercials even more than usual.
Between sliders and chicken wings I was doing my best to keep my eyes peeled for any car commercials that had a shot of winning the day (because it was pretty obvious the Rams weren’t). While there weren’t many “new” ads as in spots that didn’t pre-release before the game, the overall batch was pretty good.
By my count, there were about 15 “big game” car commercials this year but I’m going to highlight my top three.
Third place: Lexus “Quarterback Safety System”
Of the batch this year, this spot by Lexus was by far the funniest in my opinion. It was also painfully ironic as the Rams were doing such a terrible job of protecting their own quarterback. Maybe Lexus should license some of this technology out to them?
Second place: Toyota “Toni”
I’m a sucker for spots that can pull off well executed messages that speak directly to the human spirit. This Toyota spot featuring real-life athlete Antoinette “Toni” Harris, is definitely one of the best executed versions of that style I have seen in a long time. For anyone out there who has ever been told they can’t do something because of who they are, this spot was probably especially meaningful. Well done Toyota.
Honorable mention: Toyota “Wizard”
Before getting into the top pick, I wanted to give a quick shout out to this Toyota Supra commercial. Regardless of what you might think of the car, the name “Supra” is still iconic. While it was a favorite of mine growing up, I never actually saw a Supra commercial when I was a kid. So, if you were to tell me that in 2019 I’d see a commercial for the Toyota Supra during the Super Bowl I would think you were nuts. Beyond that I do enjoy the style of the spot. Sure there is a little too much CG effects, but come on, they weren’t really going to build a giant pinball machine.
First place: Jeep “More Than Just Words”
You guys know that I don’t like to get too political here; but I’m not deaf or blind. No matter where you fall in your political or social beliefs, I think we can all agree that the country is kind of divided right now. That is what makes this Jeep spot extra poignant. It focuses on all the things that make America what it is. From people going to work to support their families to men and women of the military and first responders. It highlights so much that I couldn’t really go into it here but it still gets across what I think is a great message. Because of that, I had to go with this for my first place pick.
