Road Atlanta is an important track to Formula Drift for many reasons. It was the birthplace of the series, its known for having some of the most enthusiastic fans, and it has one of the most daring course layouts.
For Latvian driver Kristaps Bluss, Road Atlanta is important for one more reason: its the site of his first ever series win.
Kristaps is one of those drivers who clearly has the skill to be a round winner and championship threat but is constantly plagued by bad luck. Though it looks like that bad luck streak finally came to an end this weekend.
On the way to his first one Kristaps took down Forrest Wang, 2017 champ James Deane, and Deane’s teammate and young phenom Piotr Wiecek. All of that was before facing and defeating 2016 champion Fredric Aasbo in the final battle.
Chris Forsberg nabbed the third spot on the podium keeping him in the championship hunt. Though, now Kristaps has gotten himself closer to the championship fight as well.
With three different winners at each round so far, the next round at Wall Speedway, NJ in June will be crucial in solidifying the real contenders for the 2018 championship.
For now, we’ll just say congrats to Kristaps on his first win!
