Toyota Reveals Twin-Turbo V6 Hybrid Sports Car Concept At Tokyo Auto Salon
The 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon is happening right now and soon we can expect to see a wave of new wheels, body kits, and performance mods slated to hit the JDM, and hopefully the US market soon after.
Toyota is using the show to preview what they have in mind for their future sports cars in the form of a concept car.
The GR Super Sports Concept was built by GAZOO Racing, Toyota’s international factory racing division. It’s where the “GR” in “GR Super Sports Concept” comes from.
The GR Super Sports Concept is mostly based off of the GAZOO Racing TS050 hybrid race car that Toyota runs in the World Endurance Championship.
At its heart of the concept is a 2.4 liter twin-turbo V6 engine mated to a “THS-R” electric powertrain that has been developed through Toyota’s WEC racing effort.
Combined, the turbo’d V6 and THS-R power train make a total of 735kW or about 986 horsepower.
GAZOO Racing says that this concept is the beginning of Toyota’s new plan to base the development of their future sports cars from their “active race cars.”
This could mean that the typical “trickle down” from race cars to street cars could be a lot faster under this new strategy for Toyota.
I’m curious to see just how serious they are about this. I’m more curious as to what the first sports car to arise directly from this plan will be.
At this point I think the next Supra is probably too far in its development to be influenced by this move. Perhaps this concept could result in the re-birth of the Celica?

TOYOTA UNVEILS CONCEPT HYBRID SPORTS CAR
**Reveals direction for next-generation sports cars**
**Incorporates hybrid technology and parts from motorsport**
Toyota has unveiled its direction for next-generation sports cars with the global debut of the GR Super Sport Concept and test car at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
Developed by Toyota GAZOO Racing, the GR Super Sport Concept incorporates hybrid technology developed for Toyota’s TS050 Hybrid race car that competes in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
The newly revealed concept is composed of mostly the same main parts as the TS050 Hybrid, reflecting Toyota GAZOO Racing’s aim to ensure that technologies and know-how acquired in motorsport are fed back into new production vehicles.
Beneath the beautifully flowing and original form are a 735kW 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine and a Toyota Hybrid System-Racing (THS-R) powertrain, which have been honed through competition racing.
With its high-efficiency electric-vehicle system and lean-burn engine, this next-generation super sports car is set to deliver both ultimate power and environmental performance.
GAZOO Racing Company president Shigeki Tomoyama said the concept is the starting point for Toyota’s plan to develop sports cars from active race cars.
“Rather than developing production cars into sports cars, we aim to work out how to incorporate the know-how developed through races and rallies into production cars,” Mr Tomoyama said.
“Although it will be some time before you all have the opportunity to get behind the wheel, I hope that the GR Super Sport Concept will give you a taste of what we aim to achieve with our next-generation sports cars.”
Toyota’s continued participation in the WEC is seen as a highly beneficial and necessary project in terms of developing cutting-edge hybrid systems and EV systems.
Fuel economy-enhancing technologies and other developments gained through such tough technological competitions are already being fed back into production vehicles.
Mr Tomoyama compared the GR Super Sport Concept with Toyota’s e-Palette Concept, a new shared mobility model for communities, unveiled at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
“If the e-Palette Concept is the next generation of the horse-drawn carriage, the GR Super Sport Concept would be the polar opposite as the next-generation racehorse. Its appeal is more personal, like that of a much-loved horse to its owner.
“Despite the differences between the two concept models, both are electrified vehicles equipped with the latest IT technologies and are set to become safe and environmentally friendly connected cars.
“Even as electrification and IT technologies accelerate, the availability of different types of cars, including polar opposite models like the GR Super Sport Concept and the e-Palette Concept, means that they will never become a commodity.
“Furthermore, it is an unchanging fact that people want to travel freely, access distant places, and to get there quicker than everyone else in attractive vehicles. The feelings that one has for a car that can do all this are rich and heart-pounding.”
Mr Tomoyama referred to a statement late last year by Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda, who said he was “strongly determined to make sure that cars will be fun for the next 100 years”.
“Toyota GAZOO Racing aims to continue making exciting cars to bring smiles to our customers’ faces and to contribute to the future of the automobile industry,” he said.
