Formula Drift Hype: Matt Field Wins In Irwindale. Chris Forsberg Wins 2016 Championship

We spent the weekend at Irwindale AKA “The House Of Drift” to watch the close of the 2016 season.  How did it all shake out?  Well as you might have guessed from the title of this post, Chris Forsberg won the 2016 championship in a very tense fashion.  Forsberg needed to make it to the great 8 to clentch but he had a spectacular crash against Pat Mordaunt in the Top 16 which meant he was forced to sit on the sidelines to see where his closest rival Fredric Aasbo would finish.  After Forsberg’s exit, Aasbo needed to finish in 2nd place or better to take away the championship from Forsberg.  That means every battle Aasbo faced had championship implications.  Aasbo would go up against Matt Field in the Top 16.  Forsberg could only watch, sitting up against the bank with his close friends, waiting for the outcome.  We caught the moment on video which you can see below.

So, with the title decided after the Top 16, who would go on to win the final round?  Well Pat Mourdaunt, Matt Field, Dai Yoshihara and Ryan Tuerck were all on a mission to grab the last win of 2016 but it was Matt Field in his special Gears Of War 4 livered car that came out on top getting his second win of the year.

And with that the 2016 Formula Drift season came to a close.  It was a crazy, controversial, interesting season and I’m really looking forward to 2017.  By the way, word has it that Formula Drift has a major announcement to make at SEMA this year concerning next season so feel free to officially start speculating now.  I’ll go ahead and start: I predict that drivers will be given special devices that will allow them to shoot red turtle shells at each other during tandem battles…

Anyway!  What did you think about the 2016 Formula Drift season?  What were some of your favorite moments?  Some of the moments  you hated?  Let us know in the comments below or tweet to us @MotorworldHype.  Also, stay tuned for another post later with all of our event coverage photos!
