When the new, or should I say current Mazda MX-5 launched the question of a hard top was immediately asked but Mazda stayed vague on the issue. Since then we kind of forgot about the possibility for a hard top MX-5. I mean, it is already such a great car that is pretty much universally loved by critics and reviewers so while a hard top version at launch would have been nice, I don’t think it was necessarily being pined for.
Yet, less than a year after launch Mazda pleasantly surprises the world by revealing a sweet looking “retractable hard top” convertible MX-5 dubbed the MX-5 RF. The “RF” stands for “retractable fastback”. At first glance it may look like the MX-5 RF is a targa top but the top does in fact retract. It can open and close at speeds up to 10mph and either way it looks damn good.
The real question is whether or not this new variant had to make any compromises in rigidity. We’ll have to wait for the road tests to know for sure. In the mean time check out the first official pictures below as well as the press release. Afterward let us know what you think about the new MX-5 RF! Do you love it? Hate it? HIROSHIMA, Japan, March 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Mazda Motor Corporation has revealed the Mazda MX-5 RF (retractable fastback). The latest addition to the MX-5 family fully embodies the model’s 26-year-old tradition of “lots of fun”. While staying true to the original MX-5 Retractable Hardtop’s goal of making open-top driving more accessible, Mazda has broken the bounds of conventional thinking to create something entirely new.
The MX-5 RF features fastback styling with a smooth roofline that slopes down to the rear end, and its unique rear roof and retractable back window offer a new open-air feeling. The power roof can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 10 km/h with the press of a button, and the roof is stowed compactly and efficiently in a limited space. Despite its fastback styling and hardtop roof, the MX-5 RF offers the same amount of trunk space as the soft-top model.
The model will feature either the SKYACTIV-G 1.5 or SKYACTIV-G 2.0 gasoline engine, depending on the market. The North American model will have the SKYACTIV-G 2.0.
Through the MX-5, Mazda hopes to offer even more people the pleasure of open-top driving, enrich their lives and become a brand they feel a special connection with.
The MX-5 RF will on display at the New York International Auto Show which opens to the public from March 25 through April 3.*
